If you want a dedicated bulk supply of high-quality SAE 30W oil specifically designed for Briggs & Stratton four-cycle engines, choose Briggs & Stratton BB3061BGS; if you need a complete, all-in-one maintenance kit tailored to the specific engine and drivetrain needs of your 2002 Yamaha FX cruiser, choose YAMAHA Yamalube 2002.
These two products serve fundamentally different purposes in the world of small engine and motorcycle care, and confusing them could lead to poor performance or even engine damage. The first is a volume-focused solution for lawn equipment and stationary generators, while the second is a precision-engineered service package for a specific generation of personal watercraft. You cannot swap these items without understanding the distinct mechanical requirements they address. One is about quantity and brand-specific fluid compatibility for air-cooled engines, and the other is about comprehensive readiness for a wet-clutch marine environment. Choosing the wrong one means ignoring the very real differences in viscosity grades, filter specifications, and spark plug requirements that define each machine's longevity.
• Briggs & Stratton BB3061BGS: Offers massive value through a case of twelve 18-ounce bottles, but it is strictly limited to SAE 30W single-grade oil for air-cooled four-cycle engines.
• YAMAHA Yamalube 2002: Provides a complete overhaul solution with oil, filters, and plugs for specific Yamaha FX models, but it is not a general-purpose oil and has a much smaller total volume per unit.
• Best for: Buy the Briggs & Stratton option if you maintain multiple lawnmowers, chainsaws, or generators and need a reliable bulk supply of standard 4-cycle oil.
• Best for: Buy the YAMAHA option if you own a 2002–2008 Yamaha FX series jet ski and need an OEM-matched service kit to handle the unique demands of marine engines.
The Briggs & Stratton BB3061BGS is designed with a clear, singular mission: keeping air-cooled, four-cycle engines running smoothly. This product comes in a convenient case of twelve bottles, each containing 18 fluid ounces of SAE 30W oil. The design philosophy here is efficiency and consistency for owners who rely on their equipment daily. Whether you are mowing a large property, clearing snow from a driveway, or powering a backup generator during a storm, this oil provides the necessary lubrication for the internal components of these machines.
The specification of SAE 30W is critical here. This is a single-grade oil formulated for typical operating temperatures found in outdoor power equipment. It creates a stable film between moving parts, reducing wear and tear over time. The packaging dimensions, roughly 7 by 4.25 inches per bottle, make it easy to store in a garage or shed alongside other tools. The weight of the individual bottle is light enough to handle comfortably during an oil change, yet substantial enough to ensure you have the correct amount of fluid for most small engine crankcases.
This product is ideal for the homeowner who owns a fleet of equipment from the same manufacturer. If you have a lawn tractor, a push mower, and a pressure washer all requiring the same type of lubricant, buying this case eliminates the need to hunt down different bottles. It simplifies your inventory and ensures that every engine in your collection gets the exact formula the engineers intended. However, if you own a motorcycle, a boat, or any vehicle with a multi-gear transmission or a liquid-cooling system, this product is not suitable. The SAE 30W grade is too thick for many modern automotive applications and lacks the additives required for wet clutches or high-performance marine environments. Skip this product if you need a multi-viscosity oil like 10W40 or if your machine requires a synthetic blend specifically rated for high-stress racing conditions.

In stark contrast, the YAMAHA Yamalube 2002 is not just a bottle of oil; it is a targeted service kit engineered for the 2002 through 2008 Yamaha FX, FX Cruiser, and FX HO series personal watercraft. This product recognizes that maintaining a jet ski involves more than just pouring new fluid into the crankcase. It addresses the entire lubrication and ignition system in one package. The kit includes three quarts of Yamalube 10W40 4W Oil, which is specifically formulated to meet the rigorous standards of Yamaha's marine engines. This viscosity grade is essential for protecting the engine under the heavy load and heat generated by high-speed operation on water.
Beyond the oil, this kit includes an OEM 5GH oil filter and four CR9EB NGK spark plugs. This inclusion changes the entire value proposition. A simple oil change on a jet ski often reveals worn spark plugs that affect performance and fuel economy. By bundling these components together, the kit ensures that when you perform maintenance, every critical point in the system is refreshed simultaneously. This is a significant advantage for owners who want to avoid the guesswork of sourcing compatible parts from third-party manufacturers. The fitment is precise for the 2002-2004 FX 140, the 2005-2008 FX and FX Cruiser, and the 2004-2008 FX HO and FX Cruiser HO models.
This product is exclusively for the jet ski enthusiast who values OEM quality and convenience. If you own one of the specified Yamaha models, this kit saves you hours of research and ensures that the oil filter threads match perfectly and the spark plugs fire correctly. It is not a general-purpose oil for cars or lawnmowers. The 10W40 viscosity is designed for the specific thermal characteristics of a marine engine, which operates differently than an air-cooled lawn mower. If you do not own a Yamaha FX series model from these years, this product will not work for you. Do not attempt to use this as a generic oil source for other machinery, as the additive package and filter specifications are tailored to the internal geometry and flow rates of the FX engine family.
• Best for bulk storage: Choose Briggs & Stratton BB3061BGS if you need to stock up on oil for multiple pieces of equipment, as the case of twelve offers a significant volume advantage.
• Best for complete service: Choose YAMAHA Yamalube 2002 if you want a "drop-in" solution that covers oil, filtration, and ignition in a single purchase, saving you from buying parts separately.
• Best for air-cooled engines: Choose Briggs & Stratton BB3061BGS because its SAE 30W formulation is optimized for the operating temperatures of outdoor power tools.
• Best for marine/liquid-cooled engines: Choose YAMAHA Yamalube 2002 because its 10W40 viscosity and wet-clutch compatible additives are required for safe jet ski operation.
• Best for part compatibility: Choose YAMAHA Yamalube 2002 if you need guaranteed fitment for the specific oil filter (5GH) and spark plugs (CR9EB NGK) used in your 2002–2008 FX model.
• Best for simplicity: Choose Briggs & Stratton BB3061BGS if your only requirement is fresh oil and you already have the necessary filters and plugs on hand.
• Best for long-term protection: Choose YAMAHA Yamalube 2002 for its comprehensive approach, ensuring that no component is left unattended during a major service interval.
• Best for cost-efficiency on oil only: Choose Briggs & Stratton BB3061BGS if you are comparing price-per-ounce for pure lubricant, though you must account for the additional cost of buying filters and plugs elsewhere.
I would buy the YAMAHA Yamalube 2002 kit if I were performing a full service on my 2002 Yamaha FX jet ski. While the Briggs & Stratton oil is excellent for lawn equipment, the complexity of a marine engine demands more than just fresh fluid. The inclusion of the OEM oil filter and the correct NGK spark plugs makes the Yamaha kit the superior choice for reliability and peace of mind. When it comes to for oil changes on a high-performance watercraft, having the right plug and filter is just as important as the oil itself. The Briggs & Stratton option is a fantastic tool for the garage, but for the specific needs of a jet ski owner, the Yamaha kit is the only logical path to a properly maintained machine.
No, the Briggs & Stratton BB3061BGS is SAE 30W single-grade oil designed for air-cooled engines. Your Yamaha requires 10W40 multi-viscosity oil with specific additives for wet clutches and marine environments, making the two fluids incompatible.
The kit contains three quarts of Yamalube 10W40 4W Oil, one OEM 5GH oil filter, and four CR9EB NGK spark plugs, providing everything needed for a standard maintenance cycle on the specified FX models.
Yes, if you own multiple pieces of equipment like a mower, a trimmer, and a generator, the case allows you to keep a consistent supply on hand. However, if you only have one machine, you might find the volume excessive unless you plan to share with friends or neighbors.
Absolutely. The kit is specifically engineered for 2002–2008 FX, FX Cruiser, and FX HO models. Since there are slight variations between years and engine types, confirming your specific model number against the fitment list is essential before purchasing.
