This art piece represents my experience at Southwest CDC Summer Camp working with the students from grades K-4. Reflecting on my time here at the camp as a BTG intern with children and staff of the community, I learned that the people within the community are the foundation/creators of the community. The people are what makes a place feel like a home. My job as a BTG intern is not to “fix” the lives of these kids/communities but to do all I can to make an impact by setting a foundation and being a good role model. Every single paint stroke was created by an individual student here at the camp that was able to choose their favorite color, brush stroke, and location emphasizing their uniqueness and individuality. At the end of the day, the children are the artist of their own lives and will do all they can to "live it by any means necessary." The people or the kids of the community are the ones that made this piece of art which represents the community where all I did as a BTG intern was provide a clean canvas for them to let their experiences, creativity, and individuality shine through.
