One of the biggest issues we have right now is the huge amounts of bio-medical waste that is generated because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Woven masks, PPE kits, shoe covers, gloves are being used and thrown at an alarming rate. While cities have some form of waste management, rural areas are absolutely LOST.
Till Jan 2021, India had generated 33,000 tonnes of Covid-19 related waste (source: Business Today)
However, one man is looking at solving this problem and providing a useful product that has multipurpose use across the country.
Dr. Binish Desai is India's Recycle Man. He has been able to convert 100 different types of waste into more than 193 different products.
With the help of waste from paper industries and his patented binder, Dr. Binish has used shredded PPE waste to make an eco brick.
One eco brick is made up of 52% shredded Covid PPE waste. This is waste that could have gone to the landfill but is now being used productively.
Brick 2.0 is light and 4 times tougher than a regular brick! And these bricks cost only Rs. 2.8 per brick!
Q: What kind of Covid waste do you accept? Are there any precautions?
Dr. Binish accepts all kinds of Covid waste.
For face masks - disposable masks, surgical masks, N95 masks are accepted. Cloth masks are not accepted
Coveralls are accepted but without any blood stains
Shoe covers are accepted without any mud or grime on it
Waste of Covid patients will NOT be accepted since that has to be incinerated as per Government rules.
Please don't throw your disposable masks in regular waste and then take them out. Throwing them in regular, non segregated waste causes contamination and stains that can cause problems. Remember to cut the strings on your masks before you send it.
Q: Where do we send the covid waste to?
You can send your waste to:
Address :
Dr.Binish Desai
12-A Girdhar chambers , Kacheri road , Valsad -396001
Please contact him at ppe2brick@gmail.com or at www.eetechgroup.com or +91 9099030117 (WhatsApp before calling) for any queries
Q: Are these bricks safe?
Yes! When you collect 50 - 100 masks, you have to first leave them aside for 72 hours. The virus is supposed to survive on surfaces for 72 hours. When Dr. Binish receives the waste, it is washed with water and disinfectant. Post this washing, the waste is shredded. The shredded mixture is once again disinfected and then finally used to make the brick. The workers making the bricks too wear PPE kits.
Q: But sending you masks is creating a carbon footprint. How can we avoid that?
Yes, that is true. But when you collect at least 50 to 100 masks, the carbon saved from landfill waste will compensate the waste used to transport the masks. The more masks you collect, the more carbon you save.
Q: I am a hospital. Can I give my waste?
Yes! You can contact Dr. Binish at ppe2brick@gmail.com or at www.eetechgroup.com or +91 9099030117
His team will get in touch with your bio-medical waste collection agency and take the waste from them.
Q: Do we need to give any special declarations to courier companies?
Yes, you will have to tell the courier company this is being sent as raw materials and not as waste. Courier companies do not generally handle waste. The courier company will have to mark these as non hazardous products for re-use. Be sure to properly pack the waste in packaging from online shopping. Properly packed and sealed boxes or bags will also not cause any problems.
Q: How can a society contribute?
A society can keep a bin in their premises where people can discard their masks. The bin can be lined with a garbage bag. Once the inner garbage bag is full, it can be isolated for 72 hours. This garbage bag can be packed into a box or bag and then sent to Dr. Binish's address:
