The story of Briar Barns begins with Joseph and Diana English, who immigrated from London to Michigan, bringing with them dreams of creating a lasting legacy in the wilderness. Their son, Richard English, born in 1843, designed and built the farmhouse that still stands today after marrying Caroline E. French of Rockford in 1879. The English family went on to establish a successful logging business and played a pivotal role in founding Sparta, laying the foundations of a community that continues to welcome families and couples alike.
Over the decades, our barns evolved alongside Michigan’s agricultural landscape, eventually becoming home to Stout Dairy Farm. The larger barn, now hosting receptions, once echoed with the rhythms of farm life, adding a rich, authentic character to every celebration. In 2015, the Denham family purchased the property and spent months restoring the historic buildings, preserving their original charm while preparing them for a new generation of events. By 2017, Briar Barns opened its doors, offering couples and families a venue steeped in history yet equipped for modern celebrations.
Today, Briar Barns stands as one of West Michigan’s most sought-after historic wedding and event venues, serving couples and guests throughout Kent County, Ottawa County, and Montcalm County.
