Re-uniting breakdance and graffiti with the power of technology.

Background

Back in the days, breakdance and graffiti were inseparable art forms. Graffiti pieces were used to announce upcoming local b-boy competitions. But with time and professionalization both art forms went down separate lanes and lost track of true collaboration.

Concept

For the world's most famous b-boy competition, the Red Bull BC One World Finals, it was time to re-unite both art forms. Like in the 70s we create a graffiti to shine a light on the event. But instead of spray cans we used the 3D-Painting-Tool "Tilt Brush" - a technology that turn the three-dimensional space into a canvas.

Artwork

In a unique collaboration the Street Artist "Steak" the b-boy all-star "Menno" used the Tilt Brush technology to turn a breakdance move into a virtual graffiti piece: the #BREAKPIECE. A gigantic, vibrant artwork with the counterfeit of a b-boy and the size of a football stadium hosting a megacity with references to the history of hip-hop.

The Trainyard

The artwork was launched in social media with a 360° video.

An app for the VR headset “Daydream” invited user to explore the artwork in an immersive and interactive way. Here, a guided tour with audio commentary of the artists curated all the details and highlights within the artwork.

Event

At the event itself the #BREAKPIECE enhanced the physical experience - in form of a holographic projection and several Tilt Brush stations where everybody got the chance to create and share their very own #BREAKPIECE.
