Successful dental implants depend strongly on the quality and quantity of bone at the placement site. The upper back jaw is often one of the most challenging areas for implant placement because of naturally limited bone volume and its close proximity to the sinus. When bone has been lost due to periodontal disease, tooth loss, or other factors, there may not be enough support for an implant.
A sinus lift, also called sinus augmentation, is a specialized procedure that increases the amount of bone in this area by gently raising the sinus floor and creating space for new bone to grow. Several surgical techniques can be used to lift the sinus and encourage bone regeneration.
In one of the most common approaches, an incision is made in the gum to expose the underlying bone. A small window is then created in the bone, and this section is carefully lifted upward into the sinus cavity, similar to opening a trap door. The space beneath is filled with bone graft material, which your periodontist will discuss with you based on your needs and treatment goals.
Once the graft is placed, the area is sutured closed and healing begins. Bone typically needs four to twelve months to develop before implants can be placed, though the exact timeline depends on the individual. In some cases, the dental implant can be placed during the same appointment as the sinus lift.
Sinus lift surgery significantly improves the likelihood of long-term implant success. Most patients report minimal discomfort and recover well following the procedure.
