An award winning £40 million housing regeneration introducing 410 apartments into 2 previously redundant post war blocks of flats at the edge of Leeds city centre. The deep retrofit was carried out by Urban Splash, a developer with a large portfolio of award winning residential urban projects. It involved preserving the original concrete structure and wrapping it with new, well insulated and generously glazed external envelope. It also involved reshaping the hard and soft landscape around the blocks to offer residents attractive outdoor spaces. The development is a mixed tenure: some apartments are owned, others are rented.
The refurbishment was staged. The BuPESA project focused on the more recent building that was completed in 2011. The study covered ca. 10% sample of the population of the building, that is 20 apartments. Part of the study, i.e. occupant satisfaction survey covered the whole building.
