The most important fundamental skill in lacrosse is catching and throwing. Without the ability to catch and throw the ball with accuracy, both individually and collectively as a team, success on the field will be unattainable. Luckily, throwing and catching is easy to work on outside of practice. All a player needs is a wall (or a bounce-back) and the time he makes for himself to improve. (You can also substitute a tennis ball, if needed, depending on the wall you use.)
Aspiring Top Dogs can earn their T-shirts by completing the Top Dog test for their respective age group. To pass the test a player must spend a fair amount of time on the Wall Ball drills recommended for his age group. Every player in the Pope Junior Greyhound Youth Lacrosse Boys Program is capable of earning the Top Dog T-shirt; however, it will require hard work and dedication. Please encourage your player to put in the time working on the wall. He will not only earn the Top Dog T-shirt, but will also become a better, more confident lacrosse player.
In addition to the Top Dog test, we will also start fall season camp (U11 and up) measuring every players ability to complete as many throws as possible with each hand (right and left) in one minute. The top few players in each grad year will be eligible for special awards and prizes. This should serve as motivation for every player to work as hard as possible at Wall Ball.
We will regularly remeasure players to see how they are improving.
