The meaning behind my PRAXIS, Bound and Broken, is the Troubled Teen Industry. 'Bound' represents how troubled teens are restrained, while 'Broken' reflects both how they enter and leave the system damaged and hurt.
The Troubled Teen Industry is marketed nationwide as therapeutic/rehabilitation institutions for troubled youth. TTI focuses on teens dealing with substance abuse, behavioral issues, and finding their own identities that don't align with their family's beliefs. The institution has different methods, which are categorized by specific programs, which as wilderness therapy, boarding schools, and boot camps/behavioral modification camps.
The majority of staff employed in the Troubled Teen Industry have no experience (in psychology, mental health work, or medical training) or background checks. This results in mishandled teens and teens denied appropriate treatment.
Returning teens from the industry have reported suffering from both physical and psychological abuse, mandatory labor in harsh conditions (such as blazing heat and freezing cold), and gaining unhealthy coping mechanisms, such as self-harm, eating disorders, substance abuse, and suicide attempts.
"All my friends are heathens, take it slow / Wait for them to ask you who you know."
INTERPRETATION: In TTI programs, teens are often placed among others they don’t know, and have the self-talk to be careful and emotionally closed off. This lyric could reflect the isolation and mistrust created in these environments.
"Please don't make any sudden moves / You don't know the half of the abuse. "
INTERPRETATION: These lines directly talk about abuse and the fear of punishment for breaking rules or acting out; both common experiences in TTI industry. The lyrics suggest that abuse is hidden and not completely understood, which reflects how the TTI often operates under secrecy and with little to no oversight.
"We don't deal with outsiders very well / They say newcomers have a certain smell."
INTERPRETATION: Many TTI programs shame or ignore their patients. This lyric could represent the humiliation, distrust, and social level enforced in some troubled teen programs, where submissiveness earns approval and resistance leads to punishment.
