For video calls, AMORNO Headphones are the clear winner among wired earbuds because their retractable design and vibration call alerts ensure you never miss a connection. Skullcandy Dime in-Ear is the runner-up if you prioritize a compact, pocket-sized form factor for quick errands rather than extended conference hours.
• AMORNO Headphones — best for long video conferences and noisy environments; pick this if you need a reliable physical connection with built-in call reminders and all-day battery life.
• Skullcandy Dime in-Ear — best for casual listening and short commutes; pick this if you want a lightweight, true wireless option that stays secure during light movement.
• Skullcandy Smokin Buds — best for users who value sustainability and audio customization; pick this if you prefer eco-friendly materials and preset sound modes for different content types.
• Skullcandy Smokin Buds — best for those seeking an intuitive touch interface with rapid charging; pick this if you need a second set of controls or a specific colorway like Midnight Smoke to match your gear.
When I first looked at the specs for the AMORNO model, I realized it was engineered specifically for people who need reliability over novelty. This isn't just a pair of earbuds; it is a hybrid system featuring a flexible neckband that holds two retractable wires. The design philosophy here is obvious: the manufacturer wanted to solve the problem of tangled cords and lost earpieces without sacrificing the convenience of a wireless neckband. For anyone working from home or traveling frequently, this approach offers a level of security that fully wireless buds simply cannot match.
The standout feature for my use case is the retractable wire mechanism. When you are done, a simple press on the button retracts the wires automatically into the sleek silicone band. This means you never have to fumble with knots or worry about the cables getting caught on a chair armrest. It feels incredibly durable, built from a material that promises to withstand daily folding and carrying.
Battery performance is another area where this unit shines. With a single charge lasting up to 16 hours of music play and 18 hours of talk time, it easily covers a full workday. Even more impressive is the standby time, which stretches to 300 hours. This suggests that if you forget to turn it off, it won't drain the battery while sitting in your bag. The inclusion of CVC 6.0 noise-canceling technology is crucial for video calls, as it filters out background hums and buzzes so your voice comes through clearly.
However, there is a trade-off to consider regarding the "wired" aspect of these earbuds. While they connect via Bluetooth 5.2, the actual audio delivery happens through physical wires that retract. This means you are tethered to the neckband by a cord, albeit one that hides itself when not in use. If you are looking for a completely tangle-free experience where you drop the earbuds directly into your ears and walk away, this might feel slightly restrictive. Additionally, while the active noise cancellation helps with background noise, it is primarily designed to filter out environmental sounds for the microphone, rather than creating a total silence bubble for your own listening pleasure. Still, for the specific goal of stable, long-duration video communication, the benefits far outweigh this minor inconvenience.
The Skullcandy Dime in-Ear represents a different philosophy entirely, focusing on simplicity and portability. These are true wireless earbuds designed for the person who wants audio without any fuss. The design is minimalist, utilizing a small charging case that fits easily into any pocket. The key selling point here is the ability to leave one bud in the case while using only one in your ear. This allows you to stay connected to calls while still hearing the world around you, a feature that is surprisingly useful for multitasking in busy offices or on the go.

Fit is critical for any earbud, and Skullcandy has addressed this by including three different rubber tips. This ensures that whether you have small or large ear canals, you can find a seal that keeps the earbuds secure. The data indicates they are engineered to stay put even during vigorous activities like running or shredding in the snow. The curved or rounded tip shape contributes to a snug fit that doesn't rely on heavy pressure to stay in place. For someone who moves a lot during the day, this stability is a major advantage over loose-fitting alternatives.
Audio quality is tuned to deliver bass that hits hard, described as blowing up the beat. This makes them excellent for workout sessions or casual listening where energy and rhythm matter more than subtle acoustic details. The microphone placement in each bud allows for hands-free calling, ensuring that your voice is captured clearly even if you are moving. The 12-hour total battery life, split between the buds and the case, provides ample power for a standard day of use without needing to hunt for a charger constantly.
The main compromise with the Dime lies in its passive nature regarding noise isolation. Unlike the AMORNO model which features active noise cancellation technology, the Dime relies on the physical seal of the ear tips to block out sound. In very loud environments, such as a bustling coffee shop or a construction site, you might find yourself cranking the volume higher to drown out the noise. Furthermore, the battery life per charge in the earbuds themselves is shorter, offering only 3.5 hours before needing to return to the case. If you plan on taking back-to-back meetings that last longer than three hours without a break, you will need to manage your charging schedule carefully.
Moving to the Skullcandy Smokin Buds, we encounter a product that balances performance with a strong commitment to sustainability. The Preppy Blue variant is not just about aesthetics; it represents a shift toward environmentally conscious manufacturing. These earbuds are constructed using 50% certified recyclable plastics, which is a significant step forward for the industry. For buyers who care about the footprint of their tech purchases, knowing that the packaging is 100% recyclable and the parts count is consolidated adds a layer of satisfaction beyond just the audio quality.
The audio tuning on these buds is expertly calibrated for comfort and clarity. They feature a noise-isolating fit that helps reduce external distractions without the bulk of active noise cancellation hardware. What sets this model apart is the inclusion of preset EQ modes accessible via four taps on either earbud. You can instantly switch between Music, Movie, and Podcast modes to optimize the sound signature for whatever you are consuming. This level of customization is rare in budget-friendly earbuds and shows a thoughtful approach to user experience.
Battery life is robust, offering up to 20 hours of total playback time with the charging case providing an additional 12 hours after the initial 8 hours in the earbuds. A standout feature here is the Rapid Charge capability, which delivers 2 hours of listening from just a 10-minute charge. This is a game-changer for anyone who forgets to charge their device overnight and needs a quick top-up before heading out. The IPX4 rating also ensures that sweat and light rain won't ruin the electronics, making them suitable for outdoor workouts or commuting in unpredictable weather.
The primary limitation for some users might be the lack of active noise cancellation found in higher-end models. While the passive isolation is effective, it may not be sufficient for extremely noisy environments like airplanes or busy subways. Additionally, the touch controls, while intuitive, require a bit of practice to master without accidentally triggering the wrong mode. However, for the average commuter or student who needs reliable sound and long battery life, the combination of sustainable materials and versatile EQ settings makes this a compelling choice.
The Midnight Smoke version of the Smokin Buds brings the same core capabilities as its blue counterpart but introduces a slightly updated connectivity protocol with Bluetooth 5.1. This refinement can offer a marginally more stable connection and better range, which is beneficial for users who move around their home or office frequently. The darker colorway appeals to those who prefer a stealthier look that blends in with professional attire or darker clothing choices. Like the Preppy Blue edition, it maintains the 50% renewable plastic construction and the eco-friendly packaging, ensuring that your ethical standards remain intact regardless of your color preference.
One distinct addition in this iteration is the emphasis on intuitive touch controls that allow for volume adjustment, call management, and voice assistant activation. The ability to activate your local voice assistant directly from the earbud adds a layer of convenience for hands-free operation. Whether you are driving, cooking, or simply trying to keep your hands free while organizing your workspace, having Siri or Google Assistant ready with a tap is a practical feature. The 200-millisecond audio latency is also worth noting, as it ensures that your lips and audio stay synchronized during video calls or streaming, preventing that annoying lag that disrupts conversation flow.
The build quality remains consistent with the rest of the line, featuring a durable design that can withstand the rigors of daily use. The ergonomic shape ensures that the earbuds sit securely in the ear canal, reducing fatigue during long listening sessions. The 1-year US warranty provides peace of mind, signaling that the manufacturer stands behind the durability of the product. For students or professionals who need a reliable tool for studying or remote work, the combination of low latency, clear voice pickup, and long battery life makes this a solid investment.
Despite its many strengths, the Smokin Buds do face competition from models with more advanced noise-canceling features. If your primary environment is consistently loud, you might find the passive isolation insufficient compared to premium competitors. The touch controls, while versatile, can sometimes be overly sensitive, leading to accidental pauses or skips if you adjust your glasses or touch your face. Nevertheless, for the price point and the inclusion of eco-friendly materials, the value proposition remains very high.
