If you want active noise cancellation and wireless freedom for your Zoom calls, choose Bose 700; if you need pristine open-back sound quality and natural acoustics for critical listening, choose Fostex TH616. These two headphones occupy completely different worlds in the audio landscape, serving buyers who prioritize convenience and isolation versus those who demand audiophile-grade fidelity and a wide soundstage. There is no middle ground here because one relies on electronics to mask the world while the other invites the world in to deliver pure musical truth.
• Bose 700: Offers powerful active noise cancellation with 11 levels of control and up to 20 hours of battery life, making it ideal for travelers and office workers who need silence; however, it is wired-only in terms of connectivity options (Bluetooth only) and lacks the acoustic openness required for deep music immersion.
• Fostex TH616: Features premium black walnut construction with 50mm drivers designed for crystal-clear, distortion-free audio across the frequency spectrum, perfect for home studio work or quiet listening sessions; but it requires a wired connection, offers zero noise cancellation, and leaks sound, making it unsuitable for noisy environments.
• Who should buy the Bose 700: Professionals needing reliable voice pickup for meetings, commuters seeking isolation, and users who value long battery life and touch controls over absolute sonic purity.
• Who should buy the Fostex TH616: Audiophiles and musicians who require an expansive soundstage, natural midranges, and velvety highs without electronic interference, and who listen in controlled, quiet spaces.
The Bose 700 is engineered specifically for the modern professional who needs to function effectively in chaotic environments. Its standout feature is the revolutionary microphone system that adapts to windy and noisy settings, ensuring your voice sounds crystal clear during conference calls. If you are working from a coffee shop, a busy office, or even outside, this headphone acts as a shield. The 11 levels of active noise cancelling allow you to dial in exactly how much of the outside world you want to block out, ranging from total silence to just lowering the ambient hum. This level of control is not just a luxury; it is a functional necessity for anyone taking important Zoom calls where clarity matters more than anything else.

Comfort is another pillar of the Bose 700's design philosophy. With a lightweight stainless steel headband and earcups tilted for a perfect fit, these headphones are built to be worn for hours without fatigue. The memory foam ear cushions mentioned in user discussions about comfort align with the physical design that supports all-day wear. You can easily access voice assistants like Alexa and Google Assistant through intuitive touch controls on the earcups, keeping your hands free while navigating weather updates or music playlists. The wireless nature of the device, supported by Bluetooth 5 technology with a range of up to 10 meters, means you can move around your space without being tethered to a desk.
However, the Bose 700 is not for everyone. If your primary goal is to hear every nuance of a recording artist's breath or the subtle decay of a cymbal, this might not be the right tool. The focus here is on balanced, lifelike sound that is full and exciting rather than analytically precise. While the dynamic drivers cover the standard 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz range, the sound signature is tuned for general enjoyment and vocal clarity rather than critical analysis. Furthermore, the lack of a traditional headphone jack means you are entirely dependent on the battery or the USB-C port for charging, though the 20-hour battery life ensures you rarely worry about power during a typical workday. This is the best open ear headphone option for zoom calls in terms of utility, but it sacrifices the "open" feeling of true audiophile gear for the sake of isolation.
The Fostex TH616 is a celebration of traditional craftsmanship meets modern acoustic engineering. Crafted from black walnut, a globally renowned wood, each pair is assembled individually in a Japanese factory, reflecting a commitment to quality that goes beyond mass production. The enclosure combines aluminum, plastic, and wood to create a structure that eliminates modal vibrations, ensuring that the sound you hear is purely what the driver produces, not the resonance of the casing itself. This is an open-back design, which means it does not seal off your ears from the environment. Instead, it allows air to flow freely, creating an expansive soundstage that feels natural and immersive. If you have ever wanted to feel like you are sitting in a concert hall rather than wearing a pair of cans, this is the experience the TH616 delivers.
At the heart of the TH616 is a 50mm driver unit featuring a 1-tesla magnetic circuit and a unique "bio-dyna" diaphragm made from bio-cellulose fibers. This combination results in deep bass, natural midranges, and smooth, velvety highs with ultra-low distortion. The frequency response spans the full 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz range, revealing crystal-clear details across the spectrum. Because there is no active noise cancellation or digital processing, the sound is raw and unadulterated. The open-back design also means that these headphones do not leak sound into the room in a way that disturbs others, but conversely, they let external noise in. This makes them perfect for a dedicated listening room or a quiet home office where silence is already present.
This headphone is strictly for the listener who prioritizes sound quality above all else. It comes with a 3-meter detachable cable and a 1/4 connector, meaning you must have an audio source nearby. There is no Bluetooth, no battery to charge, and no touch controls. The absence of noise cancellation is a trade-off, but for many audiophiles, it is a non-issue because they listen in controlled environments anyway. The "best sleep headphones for zoom calls" label might seem contradictory here, but for those who need the ultimate in sonic accuracy during quiet listening sessions, the TH616 is unmatched. It is not designed for the commuter or the traveler; it is designed for the person who sits down, puts them on, and listens.
• Best for Zoom Calls and Meetings → Bose 700, thanks to its superior microphone array and active noise cancellation that isolates your voice from background chatter.
• Best for Music Immersion → Fostex TH616, offering an open-back soundstage and natural tonality that brings recordings to life without artificial coloring.
• Best for Battery Life → Bose 700, providing up to 20 hours of continuous wireless use, whereas the Fostex TH616 has no battery as it is fully wired.
• Best for Travel and Commuting → Bose 700, since its noise cancellation blocks out airplane engines, train rumbles, and office noise.
• Best for Home Studio or Critical Listening → Fostex TH616, with its precision-machined wooden housing and low-distortion drivers revealing hidden details in mixes.
• Best for Wireless Freedom → Bose 700, allowing movement up to 10 meters away from your device via Bluetooth 5.
• Best for Durability and Build Quality → Both offer premium materials, but the Fostex TH616 uses solid black walnut and aluminum, while the Bose 700 uses stainless steel and high-grade plastics.
• Best for Quiet Environments Only → Fostex TH616, as the open-back design will let outside noise in and leak your music out.
In my opinion, I would choose the Bose 700 if my primary goal was to stay productive and connected during a workday filled with back-to-back video conferences. The ability to block out distractions and ensure my voice is heard clearly on Zoom calls is a game-changer for remote professionals. However, if I were sitting in a quiet room to enjoy my favorite albums or mix audio tracks, I would immediately switch to the Fostex TH616. The sonic purity and natural presentation of the open-back design simply cannot be replicated by any amount of digital processing. Ultimately, the Bose 700 wins for utility and connectivity, while the Fostex TH616 reigns supreme for pure auditory pleasure.
The Bose 700 is explicitly designed for this scenario with its advanced microphone system and active noise cancellation, making it excellent for noisy environments. The Fostex TH616 lacks both features and is better suited for quiet rooms where external noise is minimal.
While the TH616 includes a 3-meter detachable cable and a 1/4 connector, its sensitivity and impedance characteristics suggest it benefits significantly from a dedicated amplifier to reach its full potential, unlike the wireless Bose 700 which drives itself.
The Fostex TH616 is heavy at 16 ounces and has an open-back design that leaks sound, making it uncomfortable for sleep and impractical for shared workspaces. The Bose 700 is lighter and designed for all-day comfort with its memory foam cushions.
The Bose 700 offers 11 levels of active noise cancellation, providing superior isolation from the outside world. The Fostex TH616 is an open-back headphone that allows sound to pass through, offering zero isolation.
