Ryosuke Kiyasu: Tokyo’s Avant‑Garde Snare Drum Icon Returns to Toronto
Ryosuke Kiyasu has spent over two decades pushing the limits of what a single snare drum can express. Born in Tokyo, he began performing in Japan’s underground experimental scene in the mid‑90s, developing the raw, physical style that would eventually make him a global figure in noise, free improvisation, and avant‑garde percussion.
From Tokyo to Toronto: The Endless Blockade Era
Kiyasu moved to Toronto in 2003, performing solo snare‑drum sets in jazz bars and experimental spaces while immersing himself in the city’s hardcore and noise community. During this period, he co‑founded The Endless Blockade, a Toronto hardcore/grind band that would become a cult name in Canada’s extreme‑music underground.
His drumming helped shape the band’s early sound before he returned to Japan in 2004 to continue developing his solo work.
Return to Japan & Global Recognition
Back in Tokyo, Kiyasu launched or expanded several major projects, including:
• SETE STAR SEPT — internationally touring noise‑grind duo
• Kiyasu Orchestra — free‑jazz ensemble
• Fushitsusha — joined Keiji Haino’s legendary avant‑rock group in 2012
He has released hundreds of recordings and performed in over 60 countries, gaining viral attention in 2018 when a Berlin street performance earned more than 23 million views.
Current Work
Kiyasu continues to tour worldwide as:
• A solo snare‑drum performer
• A member of SETE STAR SEPT
• A member of Kiyasu Orchestra
• A drummer for Fushitsusha
His schedule includes festivals, art events, and experimental‑music showcases across Europe, Asia, and North America.

Kiyasu returns to Toronto this Friday for a rare solo snare‑drum performance at The Bovine Sex Club — a full‑circle moment in the city where he first developed his solo practice and formed The Endless Blockade.
