Food and Textiles Technology and Hospitality Report

Years 7 and 8

Technology – Mandatory - Textiles, Technology – Mandatory - Food

Students use the Design Process to design, manufacture and market a product. They are given a Design Brief (problem) which they have to solve. They are taught skills e.g. using a sewing machine, overlocker and computer aided design machine, food preparation equipment, , and develop knowledge about the area they are studying e.g. fibres, yarns, fabrics, dyeing, nutrition, reading a recipe etc. Electronic textiles have been introduced this year with interesting results from the students. The students also study cultural influences, specifically on Aboriginal and Japanese focus in textiles and food.

W Elective – Simply Sewing and Simply Irresistible

These classes allow the students to enjoy learning about sewing and food whilst producing items for their own interest and pleasure which they can elect to pursue further into Year 9 and 10 and senior classes. These classes teach basic skills but also allow students to extend their existing skills and creativity in a fun, project based learning environment.

Years 9 and 10

Food Technology, Textiles Technology

These 2 year courses take the students further into the field of Textiles Technology and Food Technology. Students enjoy and continue to produce items based on the knowledge they are learning in the theory lessons. Focus in the classroom is on developing trends, innovations, use of technology and the development of the student’s skills, abilities and knowledge.

W Elective – Upcycling Fashion

This is a new semester elective which caters for the trends in recycling and reducing waste. The students are loving being creative whilst learning skills in sewing. It is a great introduction to senior studies of Textiles and Design.

W Elective – Child Care

The students thoroughly enjoy this course as they learn about caring for a child, from conception and pregnancy through to the developing years. Learning is practically based where the students are given opportunities to look after a baby (egg) and create learning tools for children e.g. book. They also produce nutritious food for pregnant mothers and babies. This is a great introduction to Exploring early Childhood in Years 11 and 12.

W Elective – Gourmet Café

This semester subject is a very successful and enjoyable introduction to the hospitality industry. Students design a café, learn how to make foods suitable for a café and how to use the espresso coffee machine. Fun, practical based and leads into the study of Food Technology and Hospitality in the senior years.

Years 11 and 12

Textiles and Design

This subject is a great course for students who enjoy developing and extending their creativity in designing and making products. It is not limited to clothing but encompasses many items made from fibre, yarn or fabric. Students have gained high bands in the Higher School Certificate, with Samantha Mackay achieving First in the State in 2015.

Year 12 Textiles and Design have been working on a Major Project over the past 7 months as part of their HSC. Projects will be on display in A15 on Tuesday 21st August between 11.30 am and 1.50 pm before they are posted to the marking centre in Sydney. Parents, Teachers and interested students are invited to see the display.

The following is a brief summary of their work:

Tayla has been working on a beach inspired dress. She has coloured her fabric and lace with liquid radiance.

Stephanie has been working on a pink lined circle skirt inspired by the 50's era and Elvis Presley. The lining features silhouette shapes from the 50's.

Sophie has been working on a beach inspired quilt showcasing many decorative techniques. The backing fabric used recycled material and Eco Dyeing using tannins in leaves.

Naomi has been working on a quilt inspired by her sporting interest of cricket.

Food Technology

Year 12 Food Technology attended the treat Factory at Berry where they learned about HACCP (global food hygiene procedure) and participated in a Chocolate Making course. They have consistently achieved high bands in the HSC every year.

Exploring Early Childhood

This Non-ATAR subject delves more deeply into the lives of babies and young children. It uses practical applications to assist the student’s learning and covers areas such as Birth, Play, Nutrition, Cultural Studies, and Children’s Literature.

Hospitality

Hospitality is a 2 Unit ATAR and Vocational Education and Training (VET) subject where students can gain a Certificate II in Hospitality as well as use Hospitality as one of their subjects to enter University. Students complete 14 competencies (units of work) over the two years. They learn and demonstrate hospitality skills and participate in whole school function catering activities. Year 12 recently attended Wollongong Novotel to further extend their knowledge and skills of the hospitality industry.

Eco Dyeing

At a previous assembly the war on waste was discussed and how much waste ends up in the ocean and landfill.

In June this year Mrs Mackay attended an Eco Dyeing workshop at the local Seechange festival.

Eco Dyeing is about using the natural tannins in leaves eg.gum and maple and pigments in vegetables eg. Onion and carrot skins and cabbage leaves to colour fibres, yarns and fabrics.

Fabric is rolled up firmly around the leaves and other pigments then bound firmly with string and steamed over boiling water for about 2 hours.

Colours vary depending on the plant pigments and tannins from red-brown to yellow and dark purple.

Throughout the world we are becoming more aware of not polluting rivers with waste water and experimenting with more environmentally sound solutions. We are being encouraged to Reuse, Renew and Recycle.

Eco Dyeing can be useful to colour fabric, clothing, wrappings for presents, gift cards, home furnishings, costumes and many other creative endeavours.
