When astronauts prepare for crewed space missions, every step of the flight is practiced thousands of times. Although launching a spacecraft from zero to orbit takes only 12 minutes, it requires years of preparation and hundreds of hours of complex training simulations. For the mission to be successful, everything needs to go flawlessly. This is why the Boeing Starliner flight-test crew in Houston is always looking for new, innovative ways to train astronauts.

Right now, Miller is responsible for progressing the virtual reality training efforts in the Starliner program. Her goal is to set up the team to be able to train astronauts for every step of the mission using immersive technologies.

Connie Miller and spaceflight training software engineer Jim May have been exploring the possibility of using VR for astronaut training since 2017, but until last year, the immersive training opportunities were still limited.

But the ambition level was high. Boeing developers in Australia had 3-D modeled the Starliner console using Unreal Engine. In Houston, the virtual training applications were integrated to the physical simulators. Meanwhile, Miller and her colleagues took on the task of testing all available VR devices on the market.

With the human-eye resolution in Varjo headsets, astronauts can see the smallest of details on the crew console. For the Boeing Starliner program, this unlocks unprecedented virtual reality training opportunities for a crewed space mission.

The $80 million, 218,000-square-foot facility includes a ramp, two hangars with high bays to accommodate large aircraft training aids, 22 classrooms, an advanced manufacturing lab, a mechatronics lab, 23 specialty labs, six flex-space labs, 37 faculty/staff offices, meeting spaces, a caf and catering kitchen.

The training center promotes economic development in the region and, as a statewide asset, will assist the S.C. Department of Commerce in attracting more aeronautic and advanced manufacturing suppliers to the state.

Boeing's pre-employment training program was created to prepares individuals for entry-level employment as mechanics in the aerospace field. Each type of mechanic is required to complete their respective program.

In the training program, both types of mechanics learn about hand tools, measuring devices, blueprint reading, process specifications, abbreviations and aircraft terminology, rivets, A/C sealing, power tools, electrical bond and ground, wiring and bundling, hydraulics, flight controls and landing gear, and oxygen lines. In addition to sharpening their basic math, teamwork, and interview skills.

If you successfully pass the WorkKeys assessment test, you will be invited to attend an interview. Depending on your assessment test scores, you can become eligible to receive a full scholarship to the training center. Upon successful completion of the training center, you will be invited to Boeing for avformal interview.

Doing simulator training would have undercut a critical selling point of the jet: that airlines would be able to allow crews trained on an older 737 version to fly the Max after just a brief computer course.

Attached was a forwarded email exchange in which the person warned an unnamed recipient against offering simulator training for Max pilots, pushing instead for the computer-based course that regulators had already approved for flight crews transitioning to the Max from earlier 737 models.

At the heart of the effort are two parallel programs: Autonomous Aircraft Inspection (AAI), which uses drones to assist with maintenance, and a Microsoft Hololens-enabled AR training initiative dubbed Augmented Training Operations Maintenance (ATOM).

ARLINGTON, Va., July 24, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] is investing $950,000 in scholarships for pilot training to grow and diversify talent required to meet significant long-term demand for commercial airplane pilots.

Boeing is also donating $450,000 to Fly Compton, a Los Angeles-based nonprofit that introduces minority youth to career opportunities in aerospace. This investment will increase flight training classes offered to students in L.A.'s Compton community and introduce career topics related to designing, building and maintaining airplanes and drones.
