Our planet is host to dozens of fantastic educational institutions that teach millions of students every year engineering processes, techniques and strategies for problem solving.
The Institute of Mechanical Engineers is an association based in London, UK who every years hosts a Formula Student Season. They state that Formula Student is: "a testing ground for the next generation of world-class engineers. Students must design and build a single-seat racing car."
More than that, it's an opportunity to collaborate on a project where you have the creative freedom and joy of engineering something as well as you possibly can. It puts all the knowledge and theory you've studied in your course, and challenges you to build something that actually works.
Over 100 teams compete, and while the journey really is the reward here, there are cash prizes, internship opportunities, and a range of awards- with bragging rights- at stake.
There are two main classes your university can choose to compete in: Electric Vehicle (EV) or Combustion Vehicle (CV). Whichever you choose, there is then also the option to compete in the Driverless Cup (DC) which has other trophy's and bragging rights opportunities.
Formula Student 2023 Points Table
Points are scored through differently weighted judging sessions.
There are three 'Static' events to be judged on, and nine 'Dynamic' events.
Whichever team scores the highest overall, wins that category.
Simple right? That's only 12 things!
The only catch is, you must redesign the chassis of your car every single season you compete. The complexity and shear quantity of work required to even participate in those 12 judging sessions is immense.
But nothing that team work, consistency, and caffeine can't help you conquer! So best of luck, see you at the Silverstone Circuit!
