If you want superior particle capture for smoke, allergens, and microscopic virus carriers in a standard 16x20x1 slot, choose BNX TruFilter 16x20x1; if you need a deeper filtration unit with a built-in maintenance reminder system for a larger HVAC opening, choose RESIDEO Honeywell FC100A1037-20.
• BNX TruFilter 16x20x1: Its biggest strength is the high MERV 13 rating combined with electrostatic technology that traps 98% of microscopic particles like smoke and bacteria without choking airflow; the trade-off is it comes in a standard 1-inch thickness which requires more frequent replacement cycles than thicker units.
• RESIDEO Honeywell FC100A1037-20: Its standout feature is the massive 4-inch depth paired with a convenient magnet reminder to track change dates, offering a longer lifespan per unit; however, it sits at a lower MERV 11 rating, meaning it captures fewer microscopic particles compared to the BNX option.
• The Verdict on Fit: The BNX is the clear choice for homeowners needing aggressive air purification in tight spaces, while the RESIDEO fits those prioritizing long intervals between changes and easier tracking in deep filter racks.
This filter is engineered for the homeowner who treats indoor air quality as a non-negotiable priority, especially during seasons when outdoor pollution spikes. With a MERV 13 rating, this unit operates at a level capable of capturing 98% of airborne particles, including pollen, mold spores, dust mites, and even virus carriers. If your home has pets that shed dander or family members suffering from severe allergies, the electrostatically charged media in the BNX filter provides a layer of defense that standard fiberglass filters simply cannot match. The design focuses on maximizing surface area within a slim profile, utilizing industry-leading low air flow resistance to ensure your furnace or AC system doesn't struggle to push air through the media.
I recommend this specific model for anyone living in an urban environment or near wildfire zones where smoke mitigation is critical. Furthermore, the fact that it is made in the USA by BNX Converting, LLC adds a layer of confidence regarding manufacturing standards and consistency. The single-sided frame technology also suggests a focus on sustainability, using recycled cardboard to reduce waste, which appeals to eco-conscious buyers who do not want to compromise on performance.
However, you should skip this product if your HVAC system requires a 4-inch deep slot or if you prefer changing filters only once every six months. Because this is a 1-inch filter (with actual dimensions of roughly 15.69 x 19.69 x 0.75 inches), it holds less dirt capacity than a thicker unit. While the low air flow resistance helps extend its life, the physical volume of the filter means it will likely need replacement sooner than a deep-pleat alternative. If you are looking for a "set it and forget it" solution for a large system, the thin profile of the BNX might require more frequent attention to maintain peak efficiency.

The RESIDEO Honeywell FC100A1037-20 is designed for the practical homeowner who values convenience and longevity over maximum microscopic filtration. This is a 4-inch deep pleated filter, a significant upgrade in physical volume compared to the 1-inch alternatives. That extra depth allows for a denser packing of filter media, which generally translates to a longer service life before the filter becomes clogged. The manufacturer recommends a replacement interval of every 6 months, which is a substantial reduction in maintenance frequency compared to thinner filters. For busy families or those who simply dislike the hassle of checking and swapping out filters monthly, this extended cycle is a major selling point.
What sets this unit apart in my view is the inclusion of the "Same Day Supply Filter Change Reminder." The bundle includes a magnet that sticks to the filter cabinet, allowing you to mark the date you installed the new unit. This solves a common problem: forgetting exactly when you last changed the filter, leading to either premature changes or dangerous delays that strain the HVAC system. Additionally, the packaging is thoughtful; each filter ships in a reusable clear plastic bag, giving you a convenient way to dispose of the old, dirty filter without making a mess of your floor or car trunk. The nominal size of 20x25x4 accommodates systems that have been upgraded to accept deeper filters, often found in newer homes or custom installations.
You should consider this filter if your HVAC system specifically calls for a 4-inch intake or if you have a very dusty home environment where quick clogging is a risk. However, you must be aware that this unit carries a MERV 11 rating. While MERV 11 is excellent for trapping large particles like dust, lint, and pet hair, it does not reach the same level of filtration as the MERV 13 BNX. If your primary concern is filtering out fine smoke particulates or bacterial carriers, the RESIDEO unit may feel slightly less effective. It is a robust workhorse for general air cleaning, but it trades some of that top-tier particle capture capability for the benefit of depth and ease of maintenance tracking.
• Best for Microscopic Particle Capture → BNX TruFilter 16x20x1, thanks to its MERV 13 rating and electrostatic media that targets viruses and smoke.
• Best for Longevity Between Changes → RESIDEO Honeywell FC100A1037-20, with a 6-month recommended replacement schedule due to its 4-inch depth.
• Best for Maintenance Tracking → RESIDEO Honeywell FC100A1037-20, because it includes a dedicated magnet reminder so you never guess the change date.
• Best for Standard 1-Inch Slots → BNX TruFilter 16x20x1, as it is designed specifically for 16x20x1 openings with actual dimensions of 15.69 x 19.69 x 0.75 inches.
• Best for Deep HVAC Systems → RESIDEO Honeywell FC100A1037-20, which fits 20x25x4 slots and utilizes the extra space for higher dirt holding capacity.
• Best for Smoke and Allergen Defense → BNX TruFilter 16x20x1, which explicitly lists smoke, odor, and virus carriers in its capture capabilities.
• Best for Eco-Conscious Buyers → BNX TruFilter 16x20x1, manufactured sustainably with recycled cardboard and a single-piece frame technology.
• Best for Clean Disposal → RESIDEO Honeywell FC100A1037-20, featuring individual reusable bags for safe transport of old filters.
After weighing the specifications, I would buy the BNX TruFilter 16x20x1 for my own home. While the RESIDEO Honeywell offers great depth and a handy reminder magnet, the air quality benefits of the MERV 13 rating are too significant to ignore. In my opinion, capturing 98% of microscopic particles is worth the slightly more frequent maintenance required by the 1-inch design. This is particularly true for winter driving conditions and the cold season indoors, where we spend more time sealed inside and exposed to recirculated air. The electrostatic charge ensures that even the smallest irritants are trapped, keeping the air cleaner for breathing. If you prioritize health and air purity above all else, the BNX is the smarter investment for your respiratory well-being.
