How We Research
We compare products from their published specs and features; the verdicts below are our independent editorial opinions.
If you want a headset built to make your voice heard clearly in loud places, choose BlueParrott C400-XT; if you need one headset that handles gaming, chat and entertainment across consoles, PC and mobile, choose Skullcandy PLYR Multi-Platform. These two look similar on a shelf — both wireless, both over-ear, both from well-known brands — but they were designed for completely different jobs. The BlueParrott is a communications tool first. The Skullcandy is an entertainment device first. Everything below flows from that single split, and it decides the answer for almost every buyer.
• BlueParrott C400-XT biggest strength: 96% mic noise cancellation, a 300 ft wireless range (100 meters per the spec sheet), and 24 hours of talk time — a pure workhorse for calls in loud environments.
• BlueParrott C400-XT biggest trade-off: A narrow 150–6800 Hz frequency range tuned for speech, not music, plus an older Bluetooth 4.1 implementation and a single small 11 mm driver.
• Skullcandy PLYR biggest strength: A 50 mm dynamic driver with 20 Hz–20 kHz range, Bluetooth 5.2, a 2.4GHz low-latency transmitter, and Enhanced Sound Perception for personalized audio.
• Skullcandy PLYR biggest trade-off: It's a gaming/entertainment headset with a removable boom mic and sound isolation — not a noise-cancelling call headset, and it's roughly ten times heavier at 314.67 g versus 1.92 oz.
• Choose BlueParrott C400-XT if you talk for a living in noisy places: trucking, delivery, landscaping, farming, RVing, or any hands-busy job where your voice has to cut through.
• Choose Skullcandy PLYR Multi-Platform if you want one headset for PlayStation, PC, Switch, Xbox (wired), and casual Bluetooth listening, with tunable audio for gaming.
The C400-XT is unapologetically a headset for talking. Its headline number is 96% mic noise cancellation, which is the whole point of the product: it's aimed at truckers, delivery drivers, mobile workers, RVers, farmers and landscapers — people who take calls while engines, tools and wind are competing with their voice. If your call quality matters more than anything else, this is the design that was built around that problem.
The second pillar is endurance and reach. BlueParrott lists 24 hours of talk time and a 300 ft wireless range, and the spec sheet confirms a 100-meter Bluetooth range and a 24-hour battery figure. Add VoiceControl so you can answer or reject calls without touching anything, and the BlueParrott Button for quick mute or speed dial, and you have a headset you can genuinely wear all shift. The convertible design helps here too: over-the-head and behind-the-neck kits are both in the box, along with leatherette and foam ear cushions, so you can pick the fit that survives a long day. It's rated IP54 for dust and moisture, which matters if you work outside.
Where it gives ground is entertainment. The frequency range is 150 Hz to 6800 Hz — a speech band, not a music band. The driver is 11 mm. Bluetooth is 4.1. If you want to feel bass in a game or lose yourself in an album, this isn't the tool. Skip the C400-XT if your priority is immersive sound, multi-platform gaming, or app-based audio tuning. Buy it if your priority is being understood on the first try, every time.
The PLYR is a gaming headset that moonlights as a general-purpose wireless headphone, and the spec sheet shows it. A 50 mm dynamic driver with a 20 Hz–20,000 Hz frequency range is built for full-range audio — footsteps, explosions, music, dialogue. Bluetooth 5.2 is current-generation wireless, and the included 2.4GHz ultra-low-latency transmitter is the interesting part for PC and PlayStation players, since it targets latency as low as 20 milliseconds. For Xbox, the included 3.5 mm cable plugs straight into the controller. That's a genuinely flexible multi-platform setup rather than a marketing label.
The feature set is software-driven. Enhanced Sound Perception runs a hearing assessment and builds a personalized sound profile. The Skullcandy app (desktop or mobile) handles ESP, game/chat mic mix, EQ and sidetone, while the earcups keep basic controls within reach. The boom mic is removable, so you can strip it down for music or travel and clip it back on for raids. Sound isolation is the noise strategy here — it's about keeping your audio in and the room out, not about scrubbing 96% of noise off your outgoing voice.
The trade-offs are real. At 314.67 g it is a substantial headset, and it's built from plastic, foam and fabric — comfortable for long sessions by design, but not ruggedized like an IP54 work headset. It has no dust or moisture rating listed, no voice-control system for answering calls, and its mic is a gaming boom mic rather than a noise-cancelling call mic. Skip the PLYR if you spend your day taking calls in a cab or on a job site. Buy it if your day is split between a console, a PC and a phone, and you want one headset to cover all three.
• Best for call clarity in noise → BlueParrott C400-XT. 96% mic noise cancellation versus sound isolation on the PLYR — only one of these is designed to clean up your outgoing voice.
• Best for battery life → Skullcandy PLYR Multi-Platform. It lists 47 hours of average battery life on a 1.8-hour charge, against 24 hours of talk time and a 24-hour charge time on the BlueParrott.
• Best for wireless freedom → BlueParrott C400-XT. A 300 ft / 100 m Bluetooth range is built for walking away from a phone or truck cab; the PLYR's strength is low latency, not distance.
• Best for audio quality and gaming → Skullcandy PLYR Multi-Platform. A 50 mm driver with 20 Hz–20 kHz coverage and a 2.4GHz low-latency transmitter beat an 11 mm driver with a 150–6800 Hz speech band for anything that isn't a phone call.
• Best for all-day wear on the move → BlueParrott C400-XT. At 1.92 oz with over-the-head and behind-the-neck options plus two ear cushion types, it's the lighter, more configurable fit.
• Best for multi-device households → Skullcandy PLYR Multi-Platform. PlayStation, PC, Switch, Xbox (wired) and Bluetooth, plus a removable mic, means one headset covers gaming and casual listening.
• Best for outdoor and dirty jobs → BlueParrott C400-XT. IP54 dust and moisture protection is a work-grade detail the PLYR doesn't list.
• Best for hands-free operation → BlueParrott C400-XT. VoiceControl for answering and rejecting calls plus the BlueParrott Button for mute and speed dial is a feature set aimed squarely at people whose hands are busy.
My Verdict
For calls in noisy places, yes — in my opinion. The C400-XT is built around 96% mic noise cancellation, a 300 ft wireless range and 24 hours of talk time, with VoiceControl and a dedicated mute/speed-dial button. The PLYR's mic is a removable gaming boom mic, and its noise strategy is sound isolation rather than outgoing-voice cleanup.
It works for both. It pairs over Bluetooth 5.2 for calls and music, and the removable boom mic means you can use it as a plain wireless headphone when you don't need a mic. It's just not a specialized noise-cancelling call headset, so a loud background will come through more than it would on the BlueParrott.
By the listed figures, the PLYR goes longer — 47 hours of average battery life from a 1.8-hour charge, versus 24 hours of talk time on the C400-XT, which also lists a 24-hour charge time. If you're measuring in days between charges, the PLYR wins; if you're measuring continuous talk time on shift, both comfortably cover a full workday.
The Skullcandy PLYR Multi-Platform, clearly. It includes a 2.4GHz low-latency transmitter for PC and PlayStation with latency as low as 20 ms, works wired into an Xbox controller via the included 3.5 mm cable, supports Switch, and adds app-based EQ, game/chat mix and Enhanced Sound Perception. The C400-XT's 150–6800 Hz speech-tuned driver isn't built for game audio.
