"We are at unique stage in our history. Never before have we had such an awareness of what we are doing to the planet, and never before have we had the power to do something about that. Surely we have a responsibility to care for our blue planet. The future of humanity, and indeed all life on Earth, now depends on us."

Families can talk about climate change and the oceans. Did you learn anything new from Planet Earth: Blue Planet II? How has human influence had a negative impact on the health of the planet's water? How does this affect different species? Do you think things are changing for the better now that this issue is more prominent? What can you do to make a positive change?
And show the extraordinary they did. The team dove deeper than anyone else ever had in those waters, and revealed that the freezing seas below the most remote and extreme environment on the planet teem with life.
"Never before have we had such an awareness of what we are doing to the planet and never before have we had the power to do something about that," said Attenborough in the final episode. "Surely we have a responsibility to care for our blue planet."
At the time, relatively few people seemed to care. The story I wrote never made it onto the pages of the newspaper I worked for. But fast forward to 2019, and plastic pollution is regarded as one of the most important environmental crises facing our planet. Public campaigns have forced manufacturers to replace long-lasting disposable plastics with biodegradable alternatives. New rules on plastic recycling are being introduced around the world and single-use plastic bags are being taxed or banned outright in many countries.
Like Planet Earth II before it, Blue Planet II has redefined what we expect from a documentary: from the previously unseen stories uncovered to the quality of the pictures, to the attention paid to the soundtrack. The icing on the cake is Sir David Attenborough, surely one of the best people on the planet, who provides placid but informative narration, at once both excited enthusiast and concerned ecologist.
[Forgot to log this when I finished it months ago]
