Every year countries around the world celebrate World Blood Donor Day (WBDD). The event serves to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products and to thank voluntary, unpaid blood donors for their life-saving gifts of blood.

A blood service that gives patients access to safe blood and blood products in sufficient quantity is a key component of an effective health system. The global theme of World Blood Donor Day changes each year in recognition of the selflessindividuals who donate their blood for people unknown to them.

On 14 June 2023, World Blood Donor Day will again be celebrated throughout the world. Officially designated as an annual event by the World Health Assembly in 2005, the Day provides a special opportunity to celebrate and thank voluntary blood donors around the world for their gift of blood and has become a major focus for action towards achieving universal access to safe blood transfusion.

We manage the national supply of blood products for all the provinces and territories (excluding Quebec). Many variables can impact our inventory such as weather, holidays or tragic events. Below is an overview of our inventory levels across all blood types.

Due to lower levels of community infection and in alignment with federal, state and local guidances and Stanford Medicine policies, as of February 3, 2023, SBC does not require masking in most donation scenarios. SBC continues to strongly recommend masking for all donors, team members, visitors and volunteers, particularly in indoor spaces. There are a few exceptions where a minimum of procedural (surgical) masking remains mandatory. Learn more at stanfordbloodcenter.org/donation-faqs.

Our members are working to help bring in the 33,000 blood donations that are needed every day to meet patient needs. These lifesaving donations support everything from acute care to ongoing disease management.

ViroMed offers comprehensive infectious disease testing for cord blood donors. In addition to infectious disease marker (IDM) testing, ViroMed performs product sterility testing for cord blood collections.

Nowadays, in France, anonymity, gratuity, volunteering, non-profit are recognized as ethical principles in blood transfusion. Can we add responsibility to this list? Can a logo named "Responsiblood" efficiently encourage blood donation? This article explores Hans Jonas's reform of the responsibility concept in order to measure its applicabilities and limits in the field of blood transfusion. Indeed, this concept - rethought by Jonas - seems to be a good encouragement which avoids the pitfalls of the concept of duty and of the idea of payment for blood donation. But can't we also see in this reform a threat to blood transfusion because of technophobia and the heuristics of fear that it involves?

Since January, UAB Medicine and LifeSouth Cord Blood Bank have partnered in collecting cord blood, and over 100 potentially lifesaving umbilical cords have been collected. Cord blood is rich with blood-forming stem cells that can help patients needing a bone marrow transplant. Cord blood transplants have successfully treated cancers, such as leukemia and lymphoma, and other diseases of the bone marrow.

Cord blood offers some practical advantages over traditional adult marrow or stem cell donations. While the tissue from an adult donor must be matched with near pinpoint accuracy to a recipient, cord blood can succeed with less perfect matching. It is also tested, frozen and ready for transplant, saving time for patients in need.

July is Cord Blood Awareness Month, and UAB and LifeSouth are dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of cord blood donation, and celebrating the doctors, nurses and mothers who help ensure lifesaving cord blood is available to help patients when needed.

The Employee Forum and American Red Cross are thankful for the generosity of blood donations and time from the of 575 donors and 110 volunteers who helped the 35th annual Carolina Blood Drive a success. Thanks to each student, staff, faculty & community member who participated, we collected 556 units of lifesaving blood. We also appreciate the 172 first-time donors who supported this longstanding community event.

We previously reported a reverse transcription-quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) panel of eight miRNAs that could classify blood, menstrual secretions, feces, urine, saliva, semen, and vaginal secretions through analysis of differential gene expression, and the purpose of the current project was to evaluate this panel in a larger population size, develop a more statistically robust analysis method and perform a series of developmental validation studies.

Body fluid identification is an important step in the forensic DNA workflow, and more advanced methods, such as microRNA (miRNA) analysis, have been research topics within the community over the last few decades. In the current project, each of the eight miRNA markers was analyzed in > 40 donors each of blood, menstrual secretions, feces, urine, saliva, semen, and vaginal secretions. A 10-fold cross-validated quadratic discriminant analysis (QDA) model yielded the highest classification accuracy of 93% after eliminating miR-26b and miR-1246 from the panel. Accuracy of body fluid predictions was between 84% and 100% when various population demographics and samples from the same donor over multiple time periods were evaluated, but the assay demonstrated limited scope and reduced accuracy when mixed body fluid samples were tested. Limit of detection was found to be less than 104 copies/L across multiple commercially available RT-qPCR analysis methods. These data suggest that miR-200b, miR-320c, miR-10b, and miR-891a, when normalized to let-7 g and let-7i, can consistently and robustly classify blood, feces and urine, but additional work is important to improve classification of saliva, semen, and female intimate secretions before implementation in forensic casework.
