Personally the issue with the special effects potentially making you lose track of the ball worries me. If the ball moves fast enough, I'd have trouble keeping my eye on it anyway. So for me, this sounds like a potential game-breaking issue. Maybe they should've had the blocks implode instead of explode.

This is what it means to breathe new life into an old game. For a game based on precision control it's important to have analog controls that never make you feel as though losing a life was the game's fault and these are perfect...as fast you are and incredibly precise. The gathering of power-ups through the use of the pointer inevitably involves some decision making calls. Getting too greedy trying to collect them can be the reason you lost a life adding a layer to the core gameplay mechanic. The level designs are strong though sometimes quite difficult. The powerups are clever. They even found a way to overcome that annoying last piece that you just can't seem to hit, having it grow dynamite blocks that string together. Add to that the ability to purchase permanent upgrades and an open-world style map to go between and you have one of the best Breakout clones to date. A significant improvement on the earlier versions. The only criticisms I can really lay on this game is the slightly odd task of collecting bikinis, shoes, jewelry and the like. If you can overlook that, this is a great game.

Holedown I keep coming back to this one. It's a premium game, one of the few I found. It's simple and straightforward. You are mining asteroids and planets by breaking blocks and you can upgrade your operation as you go. Eventually you get fully upgraded and can mine a black hole, which is endless mode. I have countless hours in this one, and it's great to pick up for less than a minute, take a shot or two, and stick your phone back in your pocket without worrying about it resetting on you. It's great, but also misses a lot of the bells and whistles or the more crafted, puzzle-like levels of some other games. Well worth the price imo but it will eventually get repetitive. 9.5/10

Spire Blast on Apple Arcade. -blast/id1532717034 This one is a lot of fun, a 3D block breaker where you are knocking down towers and meeting specific requirements along the way. Reminds me a bit of Boom Blox on the Wii. It's a lot of fun throwing a projectile just right to cause a cascade of blocks that drops half the tower at once. I do feel like some of the elements don't work great together. Occasionally I despaired of knocking half the tower down at once since I needed to individually clear a specific number of colored blocks and the ones that fall when you destabilize the tower don't count. But overall the game is great and while it has boosts and consumable power ups, it doesn't feel like those are essential. I got to level 60 or so with using maybe 4 of them. If you have Apple Arcade, downloading this is a no-brainer. 8.5/10

Bricks n Balls -n-balls/id1331794412 an above average free block breaker. It actually delivers on the special levels you see in the ads where you have to shoot precisely to get your balls to a bomb in the center. First several levels were great and felt like they were well made with paths the skillful player could aim for to get big points. As it went on, it felt less and less crafted, and more like you needed various boosts to three-star a level. Also riddled with ads, but it does have a reasonably priced option to remove ads. It also has a ridiculously expensive subscription which makes me worried to get too invested in the game. But if you're going to pick a random free block breaker app from an ad, this one is a pretty decent choice. 7/10

Brick Breaker Dungeon -breaker-dungeon/id1467454972 I normally love casual games with RPG elements, but this one didn't click with me. The power curve is balanced so that you never feel any stronger as you level up. Every level feels mostly the same, and the special blocks feel similar to every other block breaker game. It's okay, but feels like it missed the chance to be great. 6/10

Eggs & Blocks -blocks/id1455957930 I'm actually annoyed at how much I like the base gameplay, and how much I hate the monetization. Instead of clearing the bricks, you need to get the lava held up by the bricks down, along with an egg. The more lava you get to the bottom, the more shots you can take. You can unlock different types of shots at different levels. You can have the basic, lots of balls in a straight line, powerful exploding shots, shots in a wide dispersal, and a couple other ones. It makes for a really interesting and diverse experience. However, the monetization utterly ruins it. There's no way to play it casually without spending a ton of money, and no coin doubler or remove ads IAP. Each level has an egg and you can hatch the egg over time to get more types of shots and XP to level those shots up. However, you only have 4 egg slots, the second lowest tier egg takes 3 hours to hatch without using gems, and you can only hatch one at a time. Also you quickly hit a cap where you need higher level shots to have a chance, but since you hatch eggs so slowly, you end up in a place where you simply can't play the game and have a chance at beating a level. It's a shame since the gameplay is so unique and fun. If they had a reasonably priced subscription, it might actually be worth it to play it, but they don't. You can buy gems at up to $100 increments and that's it. Noteworthy since the gameplay is good, but it hurts all the worse because of it. 3/10

If the stick reaches its death, the game is over and you have lost. The challenges are great because they keep you entertained. Some people don't like the challenges in this game, but other people really love them.
