Rian L. Moses

Richmond, VA

I am Rian L. Moses, a black woman, and I finally feel comfortable with my voice. I have been using my art to carry my voice for others to hear. I am more focused, steady on my feet, and not looking back. Being a black artist today is a balancing act. On one hand I want to just make beautiful art, eye candy with no agenda. On the other hand, I want to represent my culture and allow the "young me" to see what they can become. Recently, I have been able to merge the two. I am able include black stories and figures to to the mostly white art world and still be true to my aesthetic of whimsy. I may not make the grab your attention black protest art, but I'm definitely protesting by making a splash with my black mer-people.

Apotheosis

This piece is the last in a tryptic series. In this scene I am reconnecting and ascending to my ancestors who were brought from slave ships. They may have been dealt death from this cruel world, but once their bodies returned to the sea, life was returned and they swam free.(In Memoriam)
