My art is idea driven, combining simple, easy to read images that, when layered rhythmically or symbolically, add meaning to each other. My current work asks questions about social justice and environmental stewardship, exploring what’s in the shadows of belief rather than settling on the high contrasts of our contemporary society. I believe strongly in the Artist’s role as an activist and change maker. Not all questions demand answers, but they do invite us to ponder and reflect. These paintings ask, “Can our dis-quiet over racism, climate change, violence or social injustice be shaped into a concrete image of our personal responsibility and involvement in social change?”
Send These
“Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!” These colorful African starlings represent the cultural richness that diversity and immigration can bring. Do the words on the Statue of Liberty still ring true when our country bans people from certain countries or cultures--choosing to “send these” away from our door?(Injustice in America)oil on panel / 30 x 30 in
On the Breakwaters of a New Chapter
A breakwater is a barrier built out into a body of water to protect a harbor from the force of waves. Generations of American history books have created a harbor where the interpretations of the victors in history are kept safe. Now, narratives that better represent the realities of a multi-faceted population are swelling and we are riding a wave of more honest conversation towards a new chapter where we can elevate and celebrate the stories of marginalized people.(Injustice in America)oil on panel / 30 x 30 in
