Siera Fountain

Powhatan, VA

As a young, black, female artist I felt my participation in this show was important due to the current climate of the world. I hope that my perspective will have a positive influence on the world and inspire others to create art to spread positivity. This particular piece is a commentary on texturism and colorism. The female with the lighter skin color is covering her tightly curled hair which is typically considered less desirable. While the lady with long, wavy hair is covering her body with darker skin that often goes unappreciated in today's society. However, the kente cloth inspired design in the background, cowrie shells, and gold leaf allude to their prosperous African ancestry. Ultimately, this artwork encourages the two female subjects to love and embrace themselves and their roots as we all should.
