"Life itself is as complex as the various pieces of a collage” is a quote that I created that describes my art. I create mix media collages on canvas which are inspired by African American life and history. The Black Lives Matter Art Show has sparked my interest because it reflects the solidarity among artists from all cultures, races, economic status and abilities with art work which was inspired by the movement.
A Day of Togetherness
This oversized piece represents three important aspects of Black life: togetherness, unity, and harmony. The tree, which is made from cork, represents growth. The many patterns in the clothes have bold colors which is common in African textile. The faces of the silhouettes are opposite and represents looking towards the future ( the heads are looking up) and at the past (the heads are looking down).(Black Lives Matter - Uncategorized)mixed media collage / 30 x 40 in
The History of the Black Vote
This piece represents the history of voting for African Americans in the United States. The figures in this piece represents a century or time which is represented by their clothes. There are signs of voter suppression shown in this piece such as a poll tax receipt, a flyer that reads “Let My People Vote Flyer” and the fact that the figures are standing in a long line. This piece also reveals famous African Americans that ran for president or Vice president, which ends with the last gentlemen wearing a BLM pin on his jacket and a ballot under his arm which is marked Kamala Harris.
