Influenced by political divide and social instability, I have been moved and inspired to illustrate the power plays in society against women and people of color. The fragility of human connections, understanding our need to stand up as one people is standing up for all.
Their Unresolved Past
(Black Lives Matter - Uncategorized)I wanted this painting to make a statement about the subjugation of African Americans throughout history. Vintage tintype portraits at the lower right of her dress suggest a relationship to the woman, with one green eye. With pen in hand she looks to rewrite her history. Flecks of paint dot her their faces and her arm. Their lives a part of white America and those that dismiss their civil rights. The white area of the painting has been scarred with sharp objects - my reaction to the long simmering racial tensions and violence towards black people... that have only worsened under President Trump.mixed media acrylic painting / 30 x 40 in
Race
(Black Lives Matter - Uncategorized)I created this painting to generate a conversation about race and the words that are used to define black people. It is about having pride in one's lineage. The background texture and rolled paper hair are made from torn pieces of a vintage dictionary, a nod to words that are used to describe people of color when the book was published. The title was inspired by a vintage photo of race cars that make up part of his face.mixed media acrylic painting / 20 x 25 in
