I want to help contribute to telling the story of the Black experience in innovative ways by participating in BLM RVA Art 2021. My paintings and this exhibit share similar objectives of showing black joy and aesthetic beauty. I paint black people on large canvases with vibrant and dreamlike backdrops with Afro-futurists aesthetics to provide an escape for spectators. My submitted works, “Rose Gold Praises” and “Morning Sun,” are my best examples of expressing emotion over conceptual approaches. The exhibit provides a platform to show that black art can come from more than our historical trauma.
