My works considers the black experience expressed in the black vernacular's habitual "be." In grammatical constructions, to say "You be____" means that you have done the thing before, do the thing in the present, and will do the thing in perpetuity. Despite the way the current narrative has been framed to suggest black people's destruction, the habitual be reflects that we have survived in the past, are surviving now, and will survive even these challenging times. These works honor our past, stand firmly in the present, and hint that there are black people in the future.
