“It’s not about the money, money, money..” The Cozy Cat Cafe in Sanford, MI sifts a familiar tune in my head. I can hear the words now, “...money can’t buy us happiness.” It’s a sentiment we tend to overlook in our lifetime. “When the sale comes first and the truth comes second.”
With a dollar to her name, Crystal Burditt forgot about the price tag and led with her heart. The song continues, “Just stop for a minute and smile.” With grace, Crystal moved into a shelter house to free herself from domestic violence. With a new beginning, she found hope in her purpose, specifically working with individuals on the spectrum with Autism and adopting out cats to loving homes.
Crystal and the others volunteer their time to create a safe space for any and all individuals. As a Registered Animal Shelter, the cafe located just outside Midland, presents an inviting environment for visitors to join their community. From bi-weekly Dungeons and Dragons (DND), domestic violence support groups, yoga with kitties for adults and kids, self-defense classes for women and children, and neurodivergent game nights there is space for a wide array of individuals.
Along with local artists who put on workshops within the cafe, you may find an opportunity to partake in ‘Gaming for Growth.’ Gaming for Growth is an event to raise funds for Children’s hospitals. No, it’s not about the, “cha-ching, cha-ching…We just want to make the world dance, forget about the price tag.”
