THE CABIN.
THE CABIN.
HISTORY: originally built in 1809 as a simple one bedroom home on a 20 acre lot of land in cheraw, south carolina. the home had only one previous owner before william march purchased the land and home in 1826, after the previous owners became too old to manage the work of maintaining the property or their home, and were forced to sell so that they could move closer to a developing city, to their children. purchasing the home, william march noted that it was in much need of love and hard work.
through the next few years, with a lot of blood and sweat, will managed to get the house in better order. in fact, he built onto it. he added a second floor where he would move the main bedroom, adding a second bedroom on the first floor. he made room for a small study, and additional space for the kitchen. the home would undergo more changes much later in its existence but its final renovations under william march finished during the summer of 1828, almost a decade before abraham is born.
later, abraham would come to know it as home. and after will's passing early in his life from cancer, the cabin and all 20 aces is gifted to him. along with the orchard they started to grow together only two years after will had taken him in. it was decided in a the last will and testament that was written only a week before his death: everything within william march's possession by the time of his death would then pass to his nephew, abraham march. it meant his home, his wealth, his land was now abraham's to do with as he pleased.
in the same year, before any of them were aware that will was terminally ill and after abraham had come home to discover deans own illness, abraham would construct a wrap around porch, as seen above (along with a porch swing that is not pictured). it was a gift for dean, along with the swing. somewhere he could sit and rest and be at peace in the fresh air without sitting in the sun too long, without exhausting himself. it took only two weeks.
it has undergone multiple renovations since its original construction, some to repair old and weathered fixtures, some to replace outdated wiring or pluming, others to simply bring change without taking too much away from what abraham has known as home almost his whole life. the brick features throughout the home clinging to what memories they can, what was, and has no intention to tear it out.
the cabin currently stands as a 2 bedroom home with a family living room, a study that has been recently renovated (within the last 30 years), a sunroom off the back of the house that overlooks the orchard (below), two bathrooms (not pictured), and a very large kitchen.
THE KITCHEN: by far one of the most important spaces within the home and one that has served as a space of peace for abraham most often throughout the years of his life. this is one of the few spaces where he's at his happiest in the home, especially as he cooks a meal or dessert (apple pies are a specialty in the march household!) made from scratch. a lot of the times, abraham will have dried lavender sprigs hanging down the same fixture that holds pots and pans (unseen), as its one of the few things he remembers his mother doing throughout his childhood home (plus it makes the kitchen smell amazing even when he's not cooking).
its a space that only recently (within the last few decades or so) abraham has made completely his own. the brick in the kitchen is completely original to the home, there used to be a cast iron oven on that wall but it was replaced with a more modern oven, recently being upgraded to a lacanche oven within the last decade. some shelves and cabinets were made by abraham from original pieces of wood that he salvaged from remodels and reused. the same wood can be found in other projects around the home. unseen above is the kitchen island, above which the fixture holding pots and pants and lavender sprigs rest.
INTERIOR: overall, he's very minimalist. with exception to the study where abraham keeps various reads he's collected throughout the years, along with the many books of lore that he's shelved throughout his life. the study is the only place where its essentially organized chaos. a lot of the features are as original as abraham managed to keep them, set up in almost the same as will had it when he used it. there are books everywhere, papers stacked up on the desk, copies of old texts in various languages from across the country and the world, and some very rare and ancient texts that he's found throughout his many years hunting.
around the home there are some things that will show their age, things that belonged to him as a kid (small knickknacks, his mothers original bible that he keeps under lock and key in a standing safe in the study (not pictured)) or to will before his passing. there are also some things that belonged to dean at some point in their lifetime that abe held on to throughout the years.
abraham likes to keep these parts of the house simple, as it is his and deans sanctuary. its their home. where they come to relax and forget the rest of the word exists. nothing is meant to impress would be guests. its their comfort above any opinions.
THE ORCHARD: this is the most significant. the most important feature on the whole lot. the orchard originally started as two trees, planted the same year that abraham came to will's to stay permanently as a way of attempting to heal their grief: one tree for his mother, the other for his father. and the following years, as the original two trees began to grow, abraham and will would plant more to create the first row of a dozen trees in the orchard. it would take almost six years for them all to begin bearing fruit as they matured.
in the years following the first trees beginning to grow fruit, will himself would plant six more in the beginnings of another row. and much, much later after that, nearly a decade after will's death, abraham would plant six more.
the first dozen trees of the orchard are still standing strong, giving fruit for over 175 years. abraham cares meticulously for each one every single day, as for a long time after the war, and longer still after that, a part of him aligned his redemption with the growth of new things; bringing something to this world rather than taking it out.
the orchard also has a standing connection to dean and his soul. its not a fact that is known to them for a very long time, but often the orchard does mirror a lot of the current state of dean and his soul. when dean is gone, the orchard seems to die (both in part because of said connection and because abraham will stop maintaining it as closely as he used to due to his grief). and when dean is alive and thriving, so are the trees.
each tree produces the best red apples, and every season he will take what he collects to market to sell. he will bake pies for dean and make fresh ciders whenever they are requested.
the orchard is where he feels sane most days, the most at peace, and the most grounded when he isn't with dean. more often than not, if he cannot be found in the cabin itself, he's outside tending to the orchard or sitting in the shade of a tree.
