Bringhurst Elementary STEM / Robotics Club

General Info

What: We're starting a STEM / robotics club for Lila Bringhurst Elementary students! We are looking at basing it on FIRST LEGO League, and creating at least one team. Each team needs 2 adults to be coaches.

Why: Introduce your kids to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) through LEGO! Kids will get to learn how to problem solve through a robotics program.

Who: FLL is divided into 3 age ranges:

Discover - Ages 4-6 (targeted to classes / afterschool programs)
Explore - Ages 6-10 (grades 2-4) (team size 2-6 students)
Challenge - Ages 9 - 14 (grades 4-8) (team size 2-10 students)

When: Teams are starting to form since mid-May. FLL season starts in August and goes to April. It will be up to the coaches how often to meet and when, but it will probably be 1-2 times a week for 1 - 1.5 hrs each time. In the summer, we may be having some get-togethers at parent volunteer homes to try different challenges, depending on parental volunteer involvement.

Where: We are still working on this -- during the school year, we may be able to use the science classroom after school to meet as a group. Individual teams may meet on the weekends at parent volunteers' homes.

How: We have a Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/groups/blazerbots -- we have some basic questions and rules to help prevent spam and make sure members are actually parents at Bringhurst, Azevada, or Blacow elementary.

Sign-ups: Please sign up using this Google Form https://forms.gle/pANsVxPcirKf9RKq8 to join the club and show intent for your child(ren) to join a team, but note it is not a commitment. Once we have coaches and they assemble a roster for a team, the formal joining of a team will be through the FIRST website (coach will send invites and have parents opt in and sign consent forms).
