blackout poetry

an online exhibition

What is blackout poetry?

Blackout poetry is the process by which one blocks out portions of words, lines, or paragraphs in a source text, selecting the phrases and words to construct new meaning. It is both a cathartic experience of creative making and also an exciting form of scavenging for possible meanings.

What will I find in this exhibition?

You will see poems collected from members of the Ohio State University community in response to an open call for blackout poetry during March, 2021. Authors made use of one of six source texts. In their poems, the authors acknowledge, respond to, and sometimes diverge from the original meaning or sentiments of their selected text.
