ICING ON THE CAKE
Used to walk the halls of high school
I was a loner but playing it cool
Wore a jean jacket a Harley eagle on my back
Stole money from Mom and liked skippin' class
Sang in the choir lookin' like a saint
Hid behind a face of makeup 'n paint
Failed math class smoked pot in the park
Drove back roads with my boyfriend at dark
The what-ifs whisper in the back of my mind
Could it have crushed me with the passing of time
The good Lord knew what would make me break
A daughter like me woulda been icing on the cake
Years later at a party thrown by a friend of mine
Tarot cards showed the grim reaper time after time
A decade later ‘n the black clothes were piling up
I was drowning in grief drinking wine in a coffee cup
The what-ifs whisper in the back of my mind
Could it have crushed me with the passing of time
The good Lord knew what would make me break
A daughter like me woulda been icing on the cake
Oh the things that I put my own Mama through
Haunts me to this day god what would my own girl do
Was I protected through all of these years
No child of my own safe from heartache 'n tears
Would your grave have crushed me if I’d lost you too
Shriveled and died right alongside with you
It's best that I’d never see your green eyes
You’re safe where you are a cloud in the sky
The what-ifs whisper in the back of my mind
Could it have crushed me with the passing of time
The good Lord knew what would make me break
A daughter like me woulda been icing on the cake
It's best that I’d never see your green eyes
You’re safe where you are a cloud in the sky
