For healthy eating, the BLACK+DECKER 2-Slice Toaster is my top choice because its compact design and extra-wide slots make quick, even toasting of artisan breads effortless. The runner-up is the 4-Slice model with the bagel function, which I recommend if you need to toast cut sides separately for a crisp texture without overcooking the soft interior.
• BLACK+DECKER 2-Slice — best for small kitchens and single servings; pick this if you value a space-saving footprint that still handles thick artisan loaves with ease.
• BLACK+DECKER 4-Slice — best for families or busy mornings; pick this if you need to prepare four slices simultaneously with dedicated settings for frozen items and bagels.
• BLACK+DECKER 4-Slice Oven — best for versatile cooking beyond just bread; pick this if you want one appliance that toasts while also baking, broiling, and keeping food warm.
This unit is designed for those who want reliability without cluttering their counter. It features extra-wide toasting slots that are specifically engineered to accommodate a variety of shapes, from standard sandwich bread to thicker artisan loaves, waffles, and English muffins. The width ensures that the heating elements reach the edges evenly, preventing the common frustration of burnt centers and pale crusts. For someone focused on healthy eating, this means you can toast whole grain or seeded breads that often struggle in narrow slots without sacrificing the texture you need.
The control system offers six distinct shade settings, giving you granular control over your crispness. Whether you prefer a light golden warmth for a soft sandwich or an extra crunchy finish for a salad topping, the dial lets you dial it in precisely. This level of customization is crucial when you are trying to manage calories or textures in your diet, ensuring you don't burn off nutrients or ruin the flavor profile of fresh ingredients. The fast heating element delivers consistent results, meaning your breakfast is ready quickly without the wait time that leads to cold coffee or rushed meals.
Cleaning is handled through a removable slide-out crumb tray located underneath the unit. This simple mechanism allows you to clear out accumulated debris with minimal effort, keeping the kitchen tidy and reducing the risk of smoke or odors from old crumbs burning during the next cycle. There is also a convenient cancel function that stops the cycle instantly if you change your mind or notice something isn't right, adding a layer of safety and control to your morning routine.
The main trade-off here is capacity. While the two slots are wide and capable, they simply cannot handle a large family's breakfast all at once. If you have multiple people eating different types of bread, you will likely find yourself running multiple cycles. However, for a single person or a couple where speed and counter space are priorities, this limitation is easily managed by the unit's efficient performance and compact size.

When the morning rush hits or you are feeding a group, this four-slice model steps up as the practical solution. Its defining feature is the ability to toast four slices at once, which dramatically cuts down prep time compared to a smaller unit. The extra-wide, self-centering slots adjust automatically to different sizes, whether you are fitting a massive slice of sourdough or a delicate bagel half. This self-centering action is particularly useful for unevenly sliced breads, ensuring the heat is distributed uniformly across every slice regardless of slight variations in thickness.
A standout feature for many health-conscious users is the dedicated bagel mode. This setting intelligently adjusts the heating pattern to toast the cut side of the bagel while gently warming the outside. You get that desirable contrast between a crispy, toasted interior and a soft, chewy exterior without having to manually flip the item or guess at timing. The unit also includes a button for frozen items, allowing you to pop in frozen waffles or bread directly without thawing first, which is a lifesaver for spontaneous breakfasts or quick snacks.
The shade selector offers seven browning levels, providing slightly more nuance than the two-slice version. This extra step allows for finer tuning if you have specific preferences for how dark you like your toast. Additionally, the extra-lift lever is a thoughtful design detail that raises smaller items like English muffin halves higher than usual, making them easy to grab without risking burns on hot surfaces. The removable crumb tray keeps the counter clean and prevents the buildup of burnt residue that can affect the taste of future batches.
The primary compromise with this model is its physical footprint. Because it accommodates four slices, it occupies significantly more counter space than the two-slice version. If you have a very small kitchen or limited workspace, this bulk might feel imposing. Furthermore, while the bagel and frozen functions are excellent, they add complexity to the controls compared to the simpler dials of the smaller unit, which some minimalist users might find unnecessary.
This appliance represents a shift from simple toasting to multi-functional cooking. It combines a toaster with a small oven, offering four distinct cooking functions: bake, broil, toast, and keep warm. This versatility makes it an ideal centerpiece for anyone looking to reduce the number of appliances on their counter. Instead of using a full-size oven for a single pizza or a few slices of bread, you can use this compact unit to achieve similar results with less energy and less preheating time. The "Even Toast" technology ensures that heat distributes consistently throughout the interior, so you get uniform browning on up to four slices of bread or a nine-inch pizza without rotating the pan.
The timer is a precision tool that includes a stay-on function, allowing for tasks that require longer durations than a standard toast cycle. Whether you are melting cheese on a dish, baking a small batch of cookies, or keeping leftovers warm until everyone sits down, the built-in audible signal and indicator light keep you informed without needing to stand guard. The stainless steel finish gives it a modern look that fits into various kitchen decors, and the clear glass door lets you monitor your food visually, ensuring you never have to open the door and lose heat to check on progress.
Cleanup is straightforward thanks to the included accessories: a bake pan, a broil rack, and a slide-out crumb tray. These components allow you to cook directly on the rack or pan and then wash them separately, keeping the main unit relatively clean. The design prioritizes durability and ease of maintenance, which is essential for an appliance that sees frequent use. For someone who eats a lot of homemade meals or wants to avoid reheating food in a microwave, the "keep warm" function adds significant value to daily meal prep.
However, the trade-off lies in its size and weight. At nearly eight pounds, it is significantly heavier than the slot-style toasters, making it less portable and harder to move around if you need to clear space for other tasks. It also requires more vertical clearance due to the glass door and internal cavity. If your sole goal is just to toast bread quickly, this unit might be overkill and take up more room than necessary compared to the simpler models. It is best suited for those who want to consolidate their cooking tools rather than just toast a few slices of bread.

Yes, both the 4-Slice toaster and the 4-Slice Oven offer settings or modes designed to handle frozen items directly, eliminating the need to thaw them beforehand.
All three models feature removable crumb trays that slide out from the bottom or front, allowing you to empty debris quickly after the unit has cooled down.
The oven includes a stay-on timer function and audible alerts, but like any heating appliance, it should be monitored while in use to ensure food does not burn.
Both the 2-Slice and 4-Slice slot toasters feature extra-wide slots specifically designed to fit thick artisan breads and waffles without getting stuck.
