I found myself constantly shifting my likes and dislikes depending on who I found myself in a room with. At least, I pretended to the point where it was convincing that I was confident, cool, calm and collected. I prided myself in being able to blend in without fully participating (or being fully present as the new buzz term would describe it). Why, oh why did I ever spend so much of my life moving based on the reality of others?
Choosing to bend and shift who you are to please others takes a lot of damn work and energy. But guess what? After doing this over many years that mask I was wearing began to feel pretty freaking comfortable, to the point where my true identity and who I was became distorted and unfamliar to me. This is especially dangerous for a Black woman in America living in a patriarcal society. The good news is that I see the change in front of my eyes. Both women and men are really beginning to wake up. This includes myself.
Now, more than ever, you must know and understand who you are at the core and Be that person unapologetically. Be that person regardless of what society says you should be. We are in an age where we are having to redefine how our society should be. What better time than now, regardless of what age you are, to redefine strenthen and/or improve what your authentic self sound, feels, look and even smell like.
