Leachate collection systems are essential for preventing leachate accumulation on liner systems and reducing environmental contamination risks. However, recent challenges have emerged with the discovery of a substance anecdotally known as "Black Goo." This sticky, black material has been found clogging both leachate and gas collection pipes in various Florida landfills, presenting new and significant challenges in leachate management as recognized as part of the 2024 Hinkley Center Research Agenda. 

First, a review of prior studies focusing on clogging issues in landfills will be conducted. A comprehensive statewide landfill survey will follow, targeting both affected and unaffected sites. The survey will be designed to collect extensive qualitative and quantitative data, which will undergo rigorous statistical analysis to identify potential contributing factors to Black Goo formation. Samples of leachate and Black Goo will then be collected and characterized from selected sites, shedding light on the specific conditions under which Black Goo forms, as well as its chemical composition. The outcome of this research aims to determine more effective management solutions.
