Fire Maul Tools is a firefighter-owned company serving firefighters, tactical teams, and military personnel worldwide by providing innovative tools that were designed for what they do. When Creator and Chicago Firefighter Mitchell Huner realized most of the tools he used on the job were adopted by the fire service, but not really made for the job, he set out to develop a solution. Today, Fire Maul Tools products have been engineered for the job. Every aspect of what we do in on scene is meticulously implemented into our line-up. We strive to not only provide the best innovation in the field but also share a drive and passion for bringing firefighter tool manufacturing back to the USA!

As part of this process, fire managers rely on weather stations and drought conditions to assess daily fire risk. However, weather stations can be sparse in these more rural areas, and manually combining weather information takes considerable time and effort.

To create the FIRE tool, the team began with a list of indicators used to assess wildfire risk and the thresholds for each that would indicate higher risk. Provided by fire managers in South Dakota, these initial indicators and thresholds were based on meteorological conditions that accompanied several large, complex wildfires in the past decade.

By comparing past weather and climate with historical fire records, the team identified conditions that resulted in high wildfire risk and the importance of each indicator that created those conditions. They then designed the FIRE tool to:

Once the FIRE tool calculates the overall risk potential, it plots it on a user-friendly interactive map in five categories, from low to high risk. This gives fire managers an overall view of risk in different locations, helping them quickly decide when and where to allocate their resources.

Although originally designed for the Great Plains, experts can readily expand the FIRE tool for other regions of the United States since it can be modified to fit certain climates and landscapes. Understanding when and where fires are most likely to occur and how they could spread helps fire response teams be better prepared when the next fire ignites.

On this day 109 years ago the fires of 1910 were burning across northern Idaho, Western Montana, and parts of Washington and Oregon. But on the following two days, August 20 and 21, winds fanned the flames into large conflagrations that raced across large expanses of the landscape, creating what became known as the Big Blowup.

Pulaski use now spread throughout the Rocky Mountain region. However, it was used not for tree planting but for fire control. By 1920 the demand was so great that a commercial tool company was asked to handle production.

The Pulaski was always my tool of choice. The shovel is somewhat limited in its use but quite effective at hurling soil and scraping and, when properly sharpened, I recall using it as an axe on small diameters. Do you recall throwing soil with your Pulaski? That sucked. And the brush hook? The epitome of hand tools by my reckoning. Skill and finesse are required limiting my use there!

Now the tools are easily slid in from the front and the friction of the rubber holds them in. I suppose if you stomp hard on the brakes you might have a tool slide forward, but this has not happened yet. And low hanging tree limbs can do havoc to anything on the roof.

NOAA Satellites monitor wildfires, as well as a number of weather and climatic conditions that enhance fire risk from space and will continue to do so for decades to come. The GOES-R Series Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI), available on GOES-16, GOES-17, and GOES-18, will also fly on GOES-U, providing rapidly updating information about wildfires through the 2030s. The JPSS Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS), available on the Suomi-NPP and NOAA-20 polar orbiting satellites, will also be available on JPSS-2, -3, and -4, providing very high resolution images of wildfires through the 2030s.

The fire may be out, but for many years, communities below a burn scar face increased flooding threats. NWS forecasters closely monitor burn scars, using high-resolution weather models, Doppler radar, and their knowledge of local terrain to identify when even modest rain storms could produce a flooding threat.

For those who love campfires like we do, know about the hazards of inhaling smoke, scorching your hands, and having the log stack move on you while it is burning.

So we asked the question: "How do we make a better and safer way to tend to your fire?"

Do not leave tool unattended on the ground and keep out of reach of children.

Purchased November 2017 and used on three burns. Handle broke right above the tool head with what I would consider to be light / limited use. At this point not sure if we can replace the handle or if the entire tool is lost?

I have used a wooden handled McLeod but like the fiberglass handle much better. There is no nut on the bottom of the Nupla McLeod so dirt doesnt cake on the bottom as easily. This is one of our favorite shaping tool for building trails in VT.

The Commander is a three-in-one fire pit tool that combines a jabber, a serrated hook, and a chopper into one tool. The Talons are a monster-sized set of tongs for grabbing and moving small logs while they are still burning. Both tools are made of carbon steel, have a high heat powder coat, and are held using a custom-molded handle (for the Commander) or grips (for the Talon). Pit Command is an American company that designs and manufactures tools so you can keep your fire lit, and all their tools are made right here in the USA.

As a test, I set both tools, one at a time, on the rim of my Breeo, which gets very hot. I waited several few minutes, and then picked them up. Though they were ever-so-slightly warm, neither were anything close to hot enough to burn me. The material of these handles is heat resistant; the coating is also heat resistant and prevents corrosion as well.

Pit Command designed the Talons to work with smaller fire pits, and they are well-suited for this task. By their nature as a pair of tongs, there is a limit to the size and weight of logs that they could handle. In my Breeo, however, they worked perfectly. e24fc04721
