I will primarily be using affinity for creating simple greeting and birthday cards. Should I go with Publisher or Designer. I am a little confused. In my mind Publisher is best suited for that, but I think I've read somewhere that Designer can to do most of what Publisher can, so should I just go with that?

I would choose Designer over Publisher due to the greater number of tools for graphics in Designer. Either will get the job done but I think it will be more fun with Designer, Publisher has tools for publishing long form works which are heavy in text and you just don't need those. Also Publisher on its own lacks a dedicated Pixel Persona where you can create raster artwork with pixel tools, granted they are in turn less powerful than Photo's tools but they will get the job done.

I loved getting to put my designs out there and getting to watch people read my cards. That was the best. They would stop at my booth, look down in silence as they read my cards and then let out a good laugh.
Jump ahead three months and we had sold our house and moved to an entirely different town. I was excited to have a larger studio space in our new house (plus an additional room to put a crib. Score.), but I was also really starting to feel pregnancy to its maximum yuck.
It's been a while since I've introduced new cards to the Cuddlefish Press line, so I finally put a few together! This time I focused on creating some boy-friendly designs. I've been enjoying drawing vehicles lately, so the construction crane was a natural choice. It's hard not to love a chubby dinosaur--the handsome balloon-toting pair below are probably my favorites in the entire Cuddlefish line right now.
I'm also excited to have found to a local printer to produce my cards, and to transition to printing on recycled paper stock. The cards still look great and are now a little more sustainable. It's been a while since I've posted, and so much has happened since then! My debut picture book as author-illustrator, FOUND DOGS, was published by Dial, I illustrated a super fun book about construction trucks for Little Simon, and there is more on the horizon!
For my first card, I created a shaker card using the Giant Party Balloon. I used Pastel Pink Hot Foil on Pink Sand Color Essentials Cardstock to hot foil the balloon. To make a fun background for the shaker balloon, I hot foiled the Starburst Glimmer Hot Foil Plate in Pastel Mint. Then, I hot-foiled the Happy Birthday sentiment and cut it with the matching die. I filled the shaker with colorful sequins for a joyful and festive touch. Finally, I attached the balloon shaker onto a card panel made from Alabaster cardstock and glued it onto an A2-sized white card base. To add a little extra sparkle, I scattered some sequins here and there.
For my last card, I used the Party Balloons Bouquet Glimmer Hot Foil Plate as the focal point. I hot-foiled the trio of balloons on white cardstock and used the coordinating die to cut them out. To make the design on the balloons, I used Distress Oxide Inks in Dried Marigold, Kitsch Flamingo, Mowed Lawn, Spun Sugar, and Squeezed Lemonade with the Balloon Bouquet Designs Stencils. I attached the balloons with foam tape onto a small card panel in Pink Sand cardstock. Then, I matted this onto an Alabaster cardstock that I ran through the machine with the Optical Arches Embossing Folder. For some extra sparkle and interest, I added some fun sequins here and there.
In addition to the blue card, I made 3 cards with the same design file but different foils and cardstock. For the pink card, I used My Favorite Things Insulation Pink cardstock and We R Memory Keepers Rose Foil Quill Foil (from the Flamingo pack). For the krafty-ish colored card, I used Neenah Desert Storm cardstock and Spellbinders Copper Glimmer Foil. And for the final card I used Gina K. Black Onyx cardstock and We R Memory Keepers Gold Foil Quill Foil.

Because I was clear on the card style, I knew I needed to take inspiration from vintage botanical images, but pair them with bold colors and modern phrases. When viewers look at these cards, they get that vintage plant illustration feel, but also pick up on the modern colors and lettering.
Before diving into designing a card, I always start out with some thumbnail sketches (aka small, loose sketches of the card concept). This may include the words and layout that will be on each card, and possibly even some of the accompanying imagery (like plants or animals).
Next I design one card in a few different ways so I can play around with style. I might try different ways of finishing the composition (like gouache texture vs. bold solid shapes) and test out various types of filler elements and color palettes.
Note that I look for non-exclusive art licensing deals so that I can both sell the cards myself and sell through art licensors! I make less money on the art licensing deals, but more money overall when I can sell them myself indefinitely. 152ee80cbc
