BoS Ethos and Costs
The goal of BoS is to foster a collaborative environment facilitated by staying at the same venue so delegates can meet frequently and discuss often. BoS meetings therefore do not offer alternative options for accommodation or reduction in price to stay elsewhere. Because of this principle, BoS meetings have limited capacity – once the venue is filled, we can no longer accept more delegates.
The registration fee for BoS meetings covers the costs of the meeting space, accommodation and all meals during the conference. Our goal is to keep registration fees as low as possible. To do this, we aim to break even each meeting. All financial decisions taken by the organizers are geared around minimizing costs for delegates.
BoS is not a society and because of our ‘break even each meeting’ goal, BoS does not have a budget to offer travel grants or registration fee subsidies for delegates. All delegates (including the organizers) are required to pay the registration fee - the only exception is for the invited plenary speakers, whose travel and registration fees are subsidized across all delegates with registration fee revenue.

Simone Immler

Simone’s work focuses on understanding how selection at the diploid level influences haploid gamete evolution and reciprocal effects. Her lab uses a variety of taxa and techniques to address fundamental questions about the evolution of anisogamy and sexual dimorphism, postcopulatory sexual selection, and sperm-mediated genetic and epigenetic effects. Additionally, Simone is co-founder and Scientific Director of Virilitas Labs, a start-up company dedicated to developing at-home fertility diagnostics.

Luca’s research examines the structural and molecular basis of sperm-egg interactions during fertilization, particularly the role of the zona pellucida in mammals and similar proteins in other taxa. By intersecting these research areas, his lab has been able to uncover proximate mechanisms of successful fertilization, such as how the polyspermy block alters the egg membrane and how sperm recognizes the egg coat at the start of fertilization. Luca is a member of the Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institute.

Lisa is an applied mathematician who uses computational methods to model biological systems. She studies the fluid dynamics of flexible fibers in flow, which can be applied to sperm motility in the female reproductive tract. She works in close collaboration with experimental biologists and has an aptitude for explaining complex biophysical models in simple language. Lisa is a National Academy Member (USA), AAAS fellow, a fellow of the Association for Women in Mathematics, and Fellow of the both the American Physical and Mathematical Societies.

BoS Meetings are held at Nynäsgården Hotel and Conference Center in Nynäsham, Sweden. The venue is located around 1 hour (by train) south of Stockholm.
