This project aims to identify the main ecological factors shaping the communities of selected aquatic and terrestrial bioindicator taxa in anthropogenic habitats - canals and their riparian zones.
In April 2026, we collected samples of aquatic macroinvertebrates as well as samples of sediment and soil for analysis of heavy metal content. We also measured abiotic water parameters.
In June, July and August 2026, we assessed Odonata assemblages based on flying adults. We also measured abiotic parameters.
In July 2026, we conducted survey of aquatic and riparian macrophytes.
From June to September 2026, we conduct monthly sampling using pitfall traps.
In April and July 2026, we conducted survey of ichtyofauna.
In April 2026, we presented the project activities at the Science Festival in Zagreb (workshops "Energy and life in freshwater canal ecosystems" & "Energy or no energy? How organisms adapt to life in and around canals").
In April 2026, we presented the project activities at the 5th MUZZA Science Week in Zagreb (workshop "The living world of freshwater canals (chlorophyll extraction and the life cycles of invertebrates and vertebrates)").
In May 2026, we presented the project activities to primary school pupils in elementary schools in Zagreb (OŠ Bukovac) and Čakovec (OŠ Svetog Josipa).
Organized by the Faculty of Geotechnical Engineering in Varaždin, University of Zagreb, World Environment Day (WED 2026) - globally observed on June 5 - was marked on June 3, 2026. On this occasion, the project was presented at the mini-symposium "Excellence Through Institutional Knowledge" via a workshop and poster presentation titled "Riparian Zone – Drava River and freshwater channels as additional habitats for bioindicator taxa in an anthropogenically modified landscape (BIO-KANAL)".
In June 2026, we presented the project activities and results of our preliminary research on artificial and heavily modified channels on the European congress on odonatology, in Teresin, Poland.
