Bill Poulos - The Philanthropist

Bill Poulos celebrated his 7th birthday with a wish unlike those of his peers.

This story begins with 10 to 15 kids all running tirelessly around the Poulos household.

After playing hard, the wiggly kids all gathered round the dinning room table, anticipating the traditional birthday song, wish, and scrumptious cake. However, on this day, Mrs. Poulos had something else in mind. She put a little twist on an age-old birthday tradition.

Bill’s Mom brought out the frosted cake, all seven candles in place, with a new idea. Today would be a day where each child would get to make a special wish as well as the birthday boy.

One by one, Mrs. Poulos asked each youngster to make their wish. Ignoring the longstanding wife’s tale that a wish won’t come true if you tell, each child’s wish was shared with hopes and giggles. Some wished for toys, some hoped for pets, but the most important was saved for the end.

Last but certainly not least, while Mrs. Poulos lit the birthday candles, seven-year-old Bill thought about the thing he hoped for most. This time the traditional Happy Birthday song was sung. “Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear Billy, happy birthday day to you!” As the kids singing drew to an end, Bill closed his eyes, made his wish, and blew out his birthday candles.

When Bill’s mom asked what he wished for, seven-year-old Bill revealed, “I wished that there wouldn’t be anymore wars.”

At that moment, all the kids gathered closer to Bill and gave him a tight group hug.

As a kid in Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Eagle Scouts, Bill helped people in his community while growing up.

Bill has since grown up to be a man who still has a passion for helping those in need; through person acts of kindness and by supporting groups who help make the lives of other better.
