The Bikeshare River Pioneer program, presented by the Ghisallo Cycling Initiative and supported by a grant from the Office of Sustainability, is an exclusive three-part training curated ride series that rewards you with a complimentary BCycle Annual Membership & bicycle helmet.
As a trainee in the Bikeshare River Pioneer program, you'll build the skills and confidence needed to navigate the Mission Reach trail effectively. You'll learn how to share the path with other riders and pedestrians while staying attuned to the natural environment. This program offers hands-on training in trail etiquette and bikeshare operation, all within the context of appreciating the natural beauty of the Mission Reach.
THE RULES
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS: BCycle is an app-based, docked bikeshare system.
A smartphone is required to create an account and navigate the system.
Riders will be required to enter a debit or credit card number to create their account.
`BASIC BIKE SKILLS ARE REQUIRED. This is not a course for those learning to ride a bicycle. Our goal is to introduce the San Antonio River as a scenic ride for citizens, offering a way to immerse themselves in nature in the heart of our bustling city.
MUST BE 18 YEARS OR OLDER.
BCYCLE HEIGHT: BCycles can be adjusted to fit various heights, but we recommend riders be at least 5'1" - 5'3" tall.
PROMO CODES: SA BCycle will provide participants with a promo code to access the BCycle system until they earn their free annual membership.
The class training portion is 30 minutes, and the ride portion is approximately 2 hours.

What is a bikeshare and how to use it?
Ghisallo Cycling Initiative will fit all riders with a new helmet and introduce their mission to create a more bike-friendly community
TRAIL TRAINING:
Ghisallo Cycling will provide hands-on trail etiquette tips during the ride.
RIDE HOST:
Bat Conservation International (BCI) will lead us on a ride to Mission San Jose to teach us about gardening for bats. Additionally, we’ll check out bat houses at Concepcion Park, study the native plants at our city’s bat garden on the Mission Reach, and use technology to identify Texas’ bat species by analyzing their echolocation calls. Free Bat Garden Seeds will be provided by BCI so you can start your bat garden today.
Halloween costumes are strongly encouraged.
CLASS TOPICS:
Unveil the Mission Reach art portals with a representative of The San Antonio River Foundation (SARF) as you set out to explore the ideal spot for summoning spirits this Halloween and learn which mysterious locations the Mission Reach art portals transport you.

RIDE HOST:
Professional Tour Guide Association of San Antonio, Bill Simons will lead us on a haunted adventure of the downtown BCycle stations, showing how accessible downtown is when you follow the river north.

GRADUATION CEREMONY:
Receive your official BCycle F.O.B. under the Art Portal, Arbol de la Vida, making you an official BCycle Annual Member. The ceremony will include an alcohol-free champagne toast.
