Security analysts need to process high velocity and veracious data for early, ideally left of exploit, detection of cybersecurity events, such as attacks, data theft, etc. The problem is challenging given the constantly evolving threat landscape. Even with advanced monitoring, sophisticated persistent attackers can spend as many as 146 days in a system before being detected. Existing systems’ lack of unified organizational view causes information flooding and overwhelms a security analyst with false alarms. We need techniques that reduce an analyst’s cognitive load. Big data crossing the organizational boundary even in mid-size environments, needs to be mined, examined, and analyzed to create ‘Analyst Augmentation Systems’ which will aid security analysts in their day-to-day operations. This workshop aims to bring together researchers in Cybersecurity and Big Data to advance homeland security’s missions of anticipation, interdiction, prevention, preparedness, and response. We invite submissions in areas (but not limited to) knowledge extraction from cybersecurity intelligence big datasets, fast analysis of security datasets for relevant information, and the use of this knowledge for various cybersecurity activities, such as early attack detection, mitigation, remediation, and forensics.
Submissions that propose a data-driven response to events like the Solarwinds hack are especially encouraged. Big data and Cybersecurity research is an interdisciplinary research field involving researchers in information technologies, computer science, public policy, computational social science, social computing, and social and behavioral studies as well as local, state, and federal law enforcement and intelligence experts, and information technology industry consultants and practitioners. The workshop will have a mix of peer-reviewed and invited papers.
This is the 9th iteration of the BigCyber workshop. The 1st BigCyber 2018, was held in conjunction with IEEE Big Data 2018. It was a half-day workshop with 8 papers presented. The 2nd iteration was held with IEEE Big Data 2019 with 8 papers and a schedule for half a day. The 3rd BigCyber 2020 was held in conjunction with IEEE Big Data 2020. It was a half-day workshop with 8 papers. The 4th BigCyber 2021 was held in conjunction with IEEE Big Data 2021. It was a full-day workshop with 15 papers. The 5th BigCyber 2022 was held in conjunction with IEEE Big Data 2022. It was a half-day workshop with 8 papers. The 6th BigCyber 2023 was held in conjunction with IEEE Big Data 2023. It was a full-day workshop with 9 papers. The 7th BigCyber 2024 was held in conjunction with IEEE Big Data 2024. It was a full-day workshop with 15 papers. The 8th BigCyber 2025 was held in conjunction with IEEE Big Data 2025. It was a half-day workshop with 9 papers.
