About Us
Our shed has been operating since 2010 and has grown over time in membership numbers, shed size and the range of activities undertaken. With around 55 members we are a small shed and mostly self funded. Woodwork has been the main shed activity but our metal work shed and equipment is now well established and equipped. A CNC router, Laser engraver and 3D printer are now operational and a training program established to help more members learn and use the equipment and technology.
Our annual fees are $110 ($55 social membership) that covers insurance, use of equipment, reasonable consumables, BBQs and contribution towards the annual Christmas lunch. A $2 daily fee covers tea/coffee and biscuits.
Members undertake their own projects, but the shed also takes on paid projects during the year to help cover ongoing operating costs. Projects have included nesting bird boxes for Melville Council Environmental Centre, metal seats and benches for a local tennis club, delivery boxes for fruit and vegetable home deliveries and wooden graduation crosses for Notre Dame University. Numerous repair jobs are also undertaken for community members. The willingness of members to use their skills and time to help build shed extensions has also helped greatly reduce the costs of shed developments. Shed members have a range of life and work skills that they share willingly with fellow Bicton shed members and with the wider WA men’s shed movement.
Doing Work for our Community
Our shed takes on small and limited projects for local residents - usually in exchange for modest donations. This work is generally minor furniture repairs and minor welding/metalwork projects. Please note that we CANNOT work outside of the shed - we can't work at your house or business. Also note our work is done by volunteers with general handyman skills. We use recycled and recovered materials wherever possible.
We also do more significant projects for charity, educational and community organisations. Please contact us for a discussion of your requirements.
Firewood
We bag off-cuts of untreated wood (no chemical or glue treatment) for firewood. It's available for $5 per bag and available whenever the shed is open.
