Statistics show that most people professing faith in Jesus have never completely read their Bible. Many people start reading the Bible but then become overwhelmed by the number of chapters (1,189) and verses (31,102) there are. What we don't realize is that we can read the Bible in a year by reading fewer than four chapters a day.

By dividing the Bible into 365 daily readings, your goal of reading the Bible in a year can easily be accomplished. Here at Bible Study Tools, not only can you come and read the Bible on a daily basis, but we can help you chart your reading progress online during the year. That means you don't have to wait until the New Year -- you can start reading the Bible today.

Last December, I went on a hunt for a new Bible reading plan. I wanted to find one that was 5 days a week (instead of the usual seven) and I was hoping to find one that was psuedo-chronological (more on what I mean by that in a moment). After searching a variety of websites, I came across this Bible reading plan that is my new favorite. I think it will be one that I use time and time again.

A couple of years ago I used a One Year Chronological Bible. I appreciate this format because it weaves together the prophetic books with the historical books. I learned about the Old Testament just by following the plan. I also enjoyed reading the Psalms of David in conjunction with the historical narrative of his life (there really were bands of angry men attacking him).

This plan is just one of many. We are blessed to have so many available options (Justin Taylor provides an excellent list here). My main hope is to encourage you to consider making this the year you read through the Bible in a year.

This unique plan put the Old Testament in Chronological order and then breaks up the New Testament books according to themes in the Old Testament and connects them to the OT daily reading. The result is that you are reading New Testament and Old Testament passages every day. This plan is a six day a week plan, so you have one day to catch up each week if you get behind. The only big disadvantage to this plan is how the NT gets all broken up. Many books of the Bible get scattered throughout the year making it impossible to capture the flow of the New Testament books. Even though this plan might not be for everyone, it does offer a truly unique experience reading through the Old Testament show very deeply how the New Testament fulfills it.

When you hear Chronological Bible Reading plan you might think at first that they are all the same. But this is far from the truth. Some Chronological plans are made based on the order the books were written (Also known as Historical Bible Reading Plans). Other plans are ordered based on when events occurred. Still other chronological plans are hybrids that combine multiple different kinds of plans together. So what is the big deal about chronological and should you try one of these plans. If you have never read the Bible chronologically, it is worth it. Few things can help you understand how the Bible all fits together more than reading it chronologically. Reading prophesies in the context of the history which they are written grants a better understanding into what they are communicating. Likewise, reading Psalms in the context of who wrote them can give you much more understanding into the experience of the Psalmist while they wrote. The only real downside to some chronological Bible reading plans is that they can break books of the Bible into such small parts that you might lose flow of a particular book (this varies with different chronological plans).

The Redemptive-Historical Plan is not a traditional Bible reading plan, but more of Bible reading study that takes you through events in Biblical history and then ties New Testament passages to these event. Its not broken up into days, but just has checkboxes so you can mark off as you go. If you want to study through how the Old Testament events have been fulfilled in the New Testament without reading through the whole Bible this plan may be for you. There are lots of great connection and its a good way to quickly get a larger picture of the Bible and see how it all connects.

Yes, the reading plan Father Mike will use for the podcast includes the entire Catholic Bible, cover to cover. Each episode will begin with Father reading 2-3 scripture passages, totaling approximately 10-15 minutes.

You will want to get the free reading plan by signing up at ascensionpress.com/bibleinayear. You can find other helpful Bible resources like The Great Adventure Bible and the TGA Bible Timeline Chart on Ascension's website.

While you do not need a copy of The Great Adventure Bible (which uses the Revised Standard Version, Second Catholic Edition for the Biblical texts) to follow along, it is the bible Father Mike Schmitz will use for the podcast. Please note there may be differences in the text if you are using a translation other than the RSV-Second Catholic Edition. Bible translations sometimes differ in word choices, and in chapter and verse numbers, as these are not always standardized between translations.

The average daily episode will be between 20-25 minutes in length, depending on the scripture readings in the official Bible in a Year podcast reading plan. The first part of the episode will feature Father Mike reading from Scripture for 10-15 minutes, and the second part of each episode will include 8-10 minutes of commentary and reflection from Father Mike.

The podcast is designed for you to follow along at your own pace. If you miss an episode or fall behind listening, you can pick up right where you left off and still complete the reading plan at your own leisure.

The Bible in a Year podcast is not a traditional Ascension Bible study. It is a free audio recording of the bible following a reading plan inspired by The Great Adventure Bible Timeline. The readings will be followed by a brief commentary by Father Mike Schmitz.

It is no surprise that many aspiring Bible-in-a-year resolutions end up being unsuccessful. Many folks flame out somewhere in Numbers, just like the Israelites! Moreover, the implied pressure to keep up with the checklist (or even friends who are doing the same plan) can sometimes turn the whole thing into a joyless (or even guilt-filled) slog.

So what I have done is crafted a selective Bible reading plan and organized it around the major movements of redemptive history. I was pretty surprised to see that (so far as I can tell) this has not been done before.

You have to be honest with yourself about the difficulty of reading some of the OT books. Three to five chapters(20-30 minutes) a day for almost two weeks in Leviticus is tough. The solution is to use a plan that takes chapters from different parts of Scripture. There are a few ways to do this:

Many Christians desire to read through the Bible, but with 66 books and what seems like endless chapters, it may feel overwhelming to know where to start. With these one-year plans, reading Scripture over 365 days is made manageable for varying lifestyles and reading goals.

Are you feeling anxious, tired, or filled with joy? Are you looking to dive into a particular theological topic or examine a particular seasonal passage? These topical reading plans offer curated Bible studies to guide you through varying moods, topics, or seasons.

It may not be a problem for those who read the 4 passages in 1 day, but the plan is designed to have its first 2 passages as a family reading and last 2 as a private reading, and can be divided so that the plan be used over 2 years.

An excellent companion to the plan is a two volume devotional by D.A. Carson called For the Love of God. Vol. 1 covers the Family readings, and Vol. 2 covers the Private readings. It's available in Logos, and also in PDF from TGC.org if you search for the title and look for an announcement by Justin Taylor. As always the Logos version is more useful. e24fc04721
