Comparison of the biblical Odes as they appear in the great fifth-century majuscule Codex Alexandrinus, both in their place among the Odes and within their appropriate biblical book, demonstrates that these songs are in fact a valuable textual resource, a conclusion that is further confirmed by an examination of the textual and paratextual features of early Odes manuscripts. A more focused study of the Song of Mary offers additional support to the hypothesis: this song remained remarkably fixed even as Odes traditions and collections remained unsettled. As this study shows, interactions between oral and written forms of transmission are complex, and thus no textual witness can be dismissed solely on the basis of its liturgical setting.

Sichuan Theological Seminary was established in 1984. The mission of STS: (1) Spirit (2) Faith (3) Talent (4) Witness of capacity. Their goal is to bring up more people to do the work of God in the world. During our meeting we met with several students. The joy and love radiating from them was truly amazing. They sang a few songs for us, and the joy they had in their faith was so contagious, they sang with such joy and peace. It was interesting that we came to learn from them, and yet they were learning from us. They were eager to ask us questions about our churches and seminaries. Through their questions we in turn learned. We learned more about our theology, our faith journey, and ourselves. After conversing with them, I think it would be neat to have international dialog with other seminaries: to discuss theology and the Gospel.

Every summer, my sisters, brothers and I looked forward to that week when we would go to church every afternoon for three to four hours. We looked forward to learning Bible stories, doing crafts and earning little prizes for learning Bible verses or new songs. And, of course, we looked forward to playing with our friends. My seven siblings and I were only allowed to go to VBS if we finished our chores. I worked very quickly to make sure I finished my share so I would not miss VBS time! When I was little, I did not know how good VBS was for me, but I continued to go every year because I enjoyed it.

During the week of July 17-21, 18 children attended the Csunkapapi Christian Camp for Roma children. It was a five-day sleep-away camp. For some children, the first day was not easy, but they quickly adjusted and had good fun. They had three meals and two snacks a day, and they were able to bathe and wash their clothes, which is not easy at home. Each had his or her own bed to sleep in. In addition to eating and sleeping well, the children enjoyed abundant time for recreation. They played many games in teams, with the winning team receiving prizes. As in the VBS described above, they made crafts, sang Christian songs and learned many Bible stories. Through the story of Naaman (2 Kings 5), the children came to understand that though sin affects our lives in terrible ways, if we come to God with prayers, read the Bible and have faith, the blood of Jesus Christ cleans us and make us new. But most important, they learned how to pray confidently, to talk with God. I have great hope that their experiences will impact them as powerfully as VBS impacted me.
