Bellflower Middle/High School strives to cherish old traditions and create new ones that allow students to become more involved and be a part of an exceptionally spirited, safe, and welcoming environment. One of our newest traditions incorporated this year was a Welcome Back Rally where we introduced new staffulty, played games, announced the fall sports schedule, and encouraged students to get involved. Back to School Week kicks off with a spirit dress up week and lunch time activities. ASB served lemonade, ordered a bounce house, and held a Lunch-on-the-Lawn event for students and staffulty to eat together. We also played a water-balloon toss with staffulty-student teams. One of our most important rallies of the year is the Homecoming Rally that is also followed up by the Homecoming Parade, football game, and dance. At this rally we decided to introduce spirit sticks, an idea inspired by Key Club. Each graduating class made their own class color spirit sticks, and ASB made a winning BMHS Spirit Stick awarded to the class with the most spirit at the end of each of our two rallies. The competition was fierce and the winning classes were excited to receive it. Another tradition we love is Fall Fest. This year, we enhanced our tradition by joining forces with PTSA, our Parent Teacher Student Association. We decided to make Fall Fest even bigger and encouraged clubs and organizations on campus to participate by running a booth. We invited our staffulty, students, friends, families, and neighbors, and worked collaboratively to celebrate our cultures and enjoy the fall season. Our band performed, and in addition, one of our beloved science teachers performed “mad scientist” science experiments. Clubs and organizations hosted booths with items for free and for sale to fundraise for their group. Our Stage Production class and Thespian troupe partnered with ASB to transform the cafeteria into a Haunted Maze which was a huge hit. We had professional fog machines, spooky corridors filled with live actors dressed in spooky costumes, scary music, and special effects lighting. Our guests played games, danced to music, and enjoyed a pumpkin patch while feasting on all kinds of delicious foods. We received positive feedback from staffulty and students, some students even said this was one of their favorite events at school ever.
We also celebrate our on going tradition of Wellness Week which elaborates on mental health, relaxation, and alleviating stress before finals, and Dude. Be Nice Week, which focuses on teaching students to be positive and spread kindness throughout the campus and community. Every year, ASB does a little presentation for our neighboring elementary schools called Buc Blast Off to give the sixth graders a brief introduction as to what school is like at Bellflower Middle/High School. Some of our middle school ASB students are asked to speak at the rally and give the sixth graders some tips and a tour of our school. We ask them to participate in some of our rally games and elaborate on how great it is to be a part of such an amazing learning environment. Bellflower Middle/High School continues to encourage students and staff to develop and implement spirit in their every day lives.
