At Bellflower Middle/High School, ASB makes it a priority to create connections with students on campus and our community as well. One goal we have this year is to make greater connections with our student and staffulty’s families and with the neighboring homes near our campus. In order to do this, we use our social media accounts to invite them to our events, and we pass our fliers to the homes near our campus. We invited our neighbors to our annual Homecoming parade as well as our Fall Fest. The day of the parade, students that are participating toss treats from their floats to the kids and adults while they enjoying the floats made by the clubs, and cheering everyone on. Another goal we have this year is creating connections between students and staffulty to make staff feel more approachable. We hosted lunch on the lawn to encourage teachers and students to eat together. We also posted a Tik-Tok challenge on our WeAreBellflower Instagram asking for student involvement at our homecoming rally. We asked students to record themselves doing the Two-Step Cowboy Git Up Tik Tok video. Of the students that submitted videos, these recordings were shown at the Homecoming Rally and the two best video performances were rewarded with goodie baskets. In addition, the teachers performed the same Tik-Tok challenge live during the rally. One of our favorite ways to encourage students to create connections with each other is by inviting guest speaker Keith Hawkins. He hosts our 7th grade seminar and 12th grade seminar every year. This year we asked him to focus on specific concerns we have with 7th grade and different concerns affecting seniors. We invited our Link Crew leaders to join the 7th graders during their seminar, and all senior ASB members and any senior interested acted as small group leaders for the senior seminar. Both grade levels responded so positively that even teachers noticed a difference the following day. Seniors felt that they were provided with a new perspective that made them feel more connected than ever to their classmates. We value these connections so much. They teach our students to be kind and to show empathy to other people which makes our campus a safer more welcoming place to be for all.
