Character education is one of our top priorities to ensure Bellflower Middle/High School Bucs have plenty of rewarding, inspiring, and academic opportunities. We instill the characteristics of Buc P.R.I.D.E. every single day. We begin the morning with daily announcements given by our ASB members. These announcements always end with “And remember, guys, show Buc P.R.I.D.E. all day, every day!” This year we include a quote of the day that connects students to inspiring figures in history and to relevant days of celebration throughout the year that demonstrate the very characteristics we teach them. To reward students who demonstrate Buc P.R.I.D.E, ASB hosts a monthly Buc of the Month. Every teacher can choose one student, and both teacher and student are invited to a pizza party. We began our year by giving each student and each teacher a P.R.I.D.E. packet that promoted the 5 characteristics: Positivity, Respect, Integrity, Dedication, and Excellence. The P.R.I.D.E. packets asked students to reflect on each of the characteristics and how those characteristics look in action, giving students and staffulty an opportunity to set the tone for the school year. During our Back to School Week lunch time events, we asked students to tell us about the characteristics of Buc P.R.I.D.E. in exchange for a cold cup of lemonade and then handed it to them with a smile. Every classroom has the Buc P.R.I.D.E. matrix posted in the room. The matrix lists ways to demonstrate each of the characteristics in common areas of the school such as the classroom, bathroom, and locker rooms as well as how to show Buc P.R.I.D.E. off campus, because we truly want students to show it all day every day. At the end of the school year, during senior and eighth grade awards nights, students are selected to receive the Buc P.R.I.D.E. award for being the best example all year. Recently, we have also included P.R.I.D.E. Time days which occur on Tuesdays and Thursdays where every student has thirty minutes to work on assignments in class or get extra assistance from their teachers. As we enter into our second quarter of implementation, the office staff is beginning to create P.R.I.D.E. related activities for students who do not need additional academic support during this time and instead want to explore college readiness or character education. One more thing we did this year to connect students to staffulty was ask staffulty members that concentrated on character education took place during Red Ribbon Week. In addition to adorning the school in red ribbons, we asked staffulty to write letters to their students during Red Ribbon Week. The letters were written on poster paper and taped to each staffulty members’ door. The letters were very personal and explained to students why we want them to say no to drugs. Many of the letters explained how drugs, alcohol, and tobacco can change their personality and ruin their life, but most of all, the letters were heartfelt and they modeled respect and compassion which our students appreciated.
