Berhane Gebru is an expert in information and communication technology for development focusing on data systems, mHealth, digital technology for information dissemination, digital literacy, digital inclusion and social network analysis. Over the past 15 years, he successfully led more than 70 projects in 40 countries involving the development and deployment of information and communication technologies (ICTs) to improve adaptation action to the impacts of climate change, strengthen health and education systems, build entrepreneurial capacity of individuals and small businesses, and increase the efficiency and cost effectiveness of electronic data collection and analysis. His work has focused on the use of mobile solutions for development, including from project design through development of curricula and user documentation and the delivery of technical and end user training. Throughout his career, he has led award-winning projects from inception to implementation including the Climate Change Adaptation and ICTs project that was honored with the prestigious UNFCCC’s Momentum for Change Lighthouse Activities Award (2015) and the Mobile Health Information System that received the International Telecommunication Union’s 2015 World Summit on the Information Society award for e-Health.
