Approach to Providing Unbundled Legal Services:
We have a client intake process (phone call or via email) to assess the legal issues and scope of legal services required for each client and determine if unbundled legal services can be offered. We will then provide the client some options about the legal work we can do for them. Our goal is to provide accessible legal services for those that cannot retain a lawyer for full legal representation.
Mediation: Has mediation training. Has conducted 11 – 15 mediations as counsel in the last five years. Has conducted 21-30 mediations as mediator in the last five years.
Approach to Supporting Clients in Mediation:
Assessing whether mediation is even an option is the starting point with my clients. Ensuring that issues of violence and power and control are canvassed is an essential part of this initial assessment. If clients proceed to mediation, I want to make sure, in advance of the mediation, that they are fully informed of their legal rights and have the necessary legal advice. I outline the process of mediation and encourage my clients to let me know what they need to make the mediation space and process the best for their needs (i.e. physical space, time, breaks, shuttle or face to face mediation, health needs, emotional needs, etc.). I want to ensure we have all the requisite information and disclosure prior to mediation and I will prepare a mediation brief for my clients. It is important to me that clients have the support they require prior to, during and after the mediation process.
Cultural Diversity Experience:
I identify as someone who is from and works with people from diverse cultural backgrounds and communities, including but not limited to clients from immigrant and refugee communities, racialized communities, Indigenous communities, people with disabilities, and LGBTQI* communities. I strive to have a legal practice that is grounded in anti-oppression and works towards social justice and addressing inequality. More information about the communities and work I have been involved in can be found on my full bio at www.sulemanfamilylaw.com
